Advantages: You learn more about a genius. Disadvantages: If you love Mozart - rather go to Salzburg.
Here we go again, another review about my home country - i love it! ;)
This time i will tell you about Mozart's Gedenkstätte in Vienna.
As most of you know Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) was born in Salzburg, therefore you will find more information (his birth place, statues, memorial places) about him there, not necessarily in Vienna.
In 1781 Mozart moved from his home city Salzburg to Vienna, where he lived at various addresses. Only ... ...in Vienna - the "Figarohaus" which you can find in "Domgasse".
Mozart decided to move to the capitol city, because it was more openminded and cosmopolitain than Salzburg. People there were more tolerant and that was what tempted Mozart.
It was there where Mozart started his independent existence of being an artist.
Mozart stayed at this address for approx. 2,5 years. He lived through many happy times with his family - his wife Constanze Weber ...
Advantages: An apartment where Mozart lived and worked Disadvantages: Limited artifacts and displays
Mozart had a number of residences whilst in Vienna. Not many are still standing, most were destroyed during WWll. There is, however, one that survived, a small apartment in a terraced building in a small narrow street within the Domgasse behind St Stephens Cathedral where Mozart lived from September, 1787. The period in which Mozart lived in this apartment were said to be the happiest for the composer. This was the peak of his musical career. He ... ...woman he loved, Constanza and had two adorable children (four others did not survive). The apartment is open to the public as a museum, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. It is now referred to as Figaro House as the opera of the same name was composed here. To visit the museum, we took advantage of a guided tour in English which also encompassed one of Beethoven’s apartments and Schubert’s birthplace. The guide, Scottish by birth, has lived in Vienna ...
Advantages: Rococo alter, Baroque organ, Neo-classical facade Disadvantages: Visit to the crypts only guided tours
Michaelerkirche, the Church of St Michael (it doesn’t sound quite so mysterious in English does it), is sited facing the entrance to the Hofburg palace. It was once the parish church to the court and is the oldest building on the Michaelerplatz. The original church dates from the 13th century. Over the ensuing centuries the church has suffered damage, undergone renovations, been expanded and repaired but yet still retains a quiet magnificence and ... ...Michaelerplatz. The white Neo-Classical façade is from 1792 and is the work of E. Koch. The roof was rebuilt with the distinctive pointed tower at this time. The protruding Baroque porch from 1724 designed by Antonio Beduzzi is topped by a series of sandstone statues depicting the Fall of the Angels by Lorenzo Mattielli.
Beside the porch is the church bell manufactured in 1525 by the Viennese bell caster, Raczko. The church was damaged as a result ...

Review of Michaelerkirche
Advantages: Fantasic monuments and carvings Disadvantages: Feels a little morbid
I was a little unsure about writing this particular review, Vienna’s Central Cemetery, Zentralfriedhof. Where to start?
As part of my family history research, I often go “grave wandering” as my son calls it. This may seem a little morbid and strange. But the connection I feel from visiting an ancestor’s grave is undeniably strong. And this too, was one of the main reasons for visiting Vienna’s cemetery, the final resting place of my idols, the musicians ... ...connection. The central cemetery lies on the southern outskirts of the city and can be reached by tram, numbers 71 or 72. The trams run at frequent intervals and the journey takes about 10 minutes.
The Central Cemetery opened in the year 1874. The buildings were designed by the German architects Mylius and Bluntschi . In 1881 the Viennese council decided to dedicate the centre of the cemetery to 'famous personalities’. These honour graves, as they ...

Review of Zentralfriedhof
Advantages: Impressive views Disadvantages: A concrete monstosity amid beautiful baroque and neo renaisance architecture
The Danube Tower: Donaturum
Rising majestically from Danube Park and dominating the landscape for miles around the Danube Tower and cannot be missed. At 826 ft (252m), this the best place to get a birds eye view of Vienna (unless you hire a plane or helicopter and sadly this option was somewhat out of my price range). It was constructed from 3,750 cubic meters of concrete and 514 tons of steel was used as reinforcement. It is anchored in foundations ... ...sounds impressive but is by no means a comfort if you don’t have a head for heights. The visitor to the tower is informed as a reassurance of safety that even at wind speeds of 166km/hour the tower only sways 1.25 meters. This sounds a hell of a lot of movement to me however whilst at the top we did not detect any swaying motion at all.
To ascend the tower you must first pay (well if you want to use the lift that is). Tickets for the lift are 5.20 ...
