The biggest schnitzel in the world

Advantages: massive schnitzels, fast service
Disadvantages: no beer, no chips, often have to queue

...walk from the Stefansdom), as Figlmüller is known throughout the world for its Wiener Schnitzel (breaded escalope of pork), mainly for the size of the schnitzel that is served. Arriving at 8pm on a Friday night, there was a queue of fifteen to twenty people but this soon went, as the turnaround rate on tables is extraordinary. I would reckon that between five and eight people eat at the same place in the restaurant each night, between 4:30 and 10:30 ...
...the reason for coming to Figlmüller is to have a Schnitzel, although for those of you who want it with “Pommes” aka chips, you will be disappointed, as they are no chips served here. However the rosti – a mash made from roast potatoes is a very good substitute for chips or otherwise the salads are well worth having. Apart from Schnitzel there are a few dishes, although if you have not come here for a Schnitzel, it would be like ...

Coffee and cakes

Advantages: Coffee, music, atmosphere
Disadvantages: Prices are a little high

Café Central: Vienna Vienna was a special holiday for me – apart from satisfying my interests in music, history and architecture – there are also the coffee houses. Coffee houses have been an essential part of Vienesse life for centuries. They are not just for drinking coffee, but provide a comfortable meeting place in a friendly ambience. Legend has it that the first coffee houses opened after the defeat of the Turks in 1683. When the Turks withdrew ...
...existed in Vienna. Café Central was the coffee house we frequented most during our holiday mainly because it was the closest to the hotel but also because of the grandeur of the interior and the history it holds within its walls. The Café Central has a high vaulted ceiling supported by Corinthian columns. Cosy marble tables provide ample seating room. The coffee house is warm and bright illuminated by high arched windows and elegant chanadliers. ...

Servus

Advantages: reasonably priced, convenient for the cinema
Disadvantages: -

Servus! Café Servus is located on Vienna’s equivalent of Regent Street, the Mariahilferstraße, which is home to most of the big shops in Vienna that have shunned the central location of the Graben and Kärntnerstraße next to St Stephens Cathedral (Stephansdom). It is also ideally situated for the Haydn International Cinema, which shows only original versions of films. As well as being a place to come for a coffee whilst indulging in a spot ...
...bill. Generally the café is pretty full by day and in the early evening, although it is almost dead by 9pm most week nights. It is big enough to know that you won’t have to reserve a table, and also there is usually a table free on the terrace which overlooks the church square, as it is adjacent to the Mariahilferkirche, and statues. All in all this is a very reasonable place to eat or come for a coffee, and great if you want to take the weight ...

not Howard Stern

Advantages: reasonable, good menu
Disadvantages: can be hard to find a table at lunchtime

...what can one say... Café Blau Stern is located just on the corner by Nußdorfer Straße Underground station (U6) and on the 37/38 tram routes (they run into the University area and out to Grinzing - a great place for going for an afternoon out of town). Being in a studenty part of town it is very busy during term time, and it can be hard to get a table at about 1pm. Its proximity to Vienna's Wirtschaftsuniversität (WU), whose students are traditionally ...
...money, makes Blaustern a place to be seen for some, although in summer it can be very pleasant for a change of scene, before heading off for a spot of shopping in the Millennium City shopping complex. The menu is varied, from very reasonable pasta dishes (the tagliatelle with salmon and mushrooms is a mere 77ATS (GBP 3.75) and there is a selection of hot and cold snacks, with the baguettes being both reasonable in terms of price, and filling. There ...

Good place to relax

Advantages: Well located for a lot of the museums and University
Disadvantages: pricey

Café Landtmann opposite the Rathaus on the Ringstraße, and next to the Burgtheater is traditionally acknowledged as being a meeting place of the SPÖ (Austria's Socialist Party) and is located just over the road from one of their offices. It offers slightly pricey coffee and beer, although this is to be expected, given the prominent position of the place, and is a favourite spot for all manner of loveys. It is especially popular for its business breakfast, ...
...to set up camp in Café Blaustern. As with a lot of the coffee shops on or close to the Ring, this place has a certain degree of swank, and as such is often used as a place to be seen at by some Viennese, but overall this does not impinge on the good service, and the general overall feel of the place. I often come here for a coffee before or after going to the Volksgarten for a leisurely stroll when I have been translating too hard, and fancy a break ...
