Vietnam Airlines

Introduction As I have a Vietnamese wife and visited her country 7 times so far I have considerable experience of using this airline both on domestic routes and for flights in the region (Hong Kong, Cambodia etc) going back to 2003. The following is my overall assessment of all my flights ... Read review

Growing airline keen to be successful

Advantages: Fantastic value domestic flights where overland travel is slow
Disadvantages: Not yet competative on long haul routes to Europe

Vietnam Airlines (Tổng Công ty Hàng không Việt Nam as it is called in Vietnamese) is the national airline. It was formed in 1989 and has always been a state owned operation. Unlike my experience of other airlines operated by Communist states such as Aeroflot in the days of the USSR and CAAC, the national carrier of China (which I have relatively grim memories of using in 1987) Vietnam Airlines is (and has for ...
...quieter than the common areas, Vietnam is though a fairly noisy country and, as an aside, earplugs are a necessity if you don't like too much noise.

Information can be a little erratic airside though it is usually OK and both Vietnamese and English are used (providing someone is confident enough to speak over the P.A. in English).

I'm Vietnam - fly me

Advantages: Outstanding service and fantastic food
Disadvantages: Absolutely none

...supposed to be on a Vietnam Airline flight - it was just a lucky mistake. I was on a business trip to Vietnam with two colleagues and we were booked BA from Heathrow to Bangkok with a Thai airlines connection to Ho Chi Minh City. However, sometimes things go wrong in order for something else to go right - and Vietnam Airlines was a happy experience. As an aside, it's worth knowing you CAN'T fly UK to Vietnam direct - normal options are Malaysian ...
...should be blessing BA or Vietnam Airlines or the Bangkok airport - we made it to the airport with a 30 minute connection to the last flight of the day with VA. We ran like crazy - my boss turning purple with the effort - and made the connection. I gave up all hope of my bags doing the same. So picture the scene. Three sweaty business class passengers gasping for their breath flop into the front row of the VA plane. The attendants - beautiful women ...

Budget airline that delivers a good service

Advantages: Very low prices, very friendly staff
Disadvantages: May take longer to travel to and from the smaller airports used

I have flown with Air Asia twice in the last 2 years, from Vietnam to Thailand and also from The Philippines to Malaysia. Both experiences were good and by booking in advance I managed to take advantage of some very cheap deals on their website. Booking online The airline's website is easy to navigate and find information on flights. The FAQ section is concise and useful and once you book a flight, you receive a confirmation email promptly and can print off your e-ticket. The fares quoted on the website now include all taxes and surcharges which is a welcome change and hopefully one that other budget airlines in the same region will implement too. I purchased 'Economy Promotional' fares both times as these are the cheapest ones and it was even possible for me to change the date of my flight from Vietnam to Thailand ...

Cheap, but long delays in Moscow

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Long, frequent delays

Areoflot were atleast £100 cheaper than any other airline when I travelled to Vietnam via Moscow. For one journey I can stand being in cramped conditions for a few hours but I didn't count on the delays. On arriving in Moscow I expected to wait for a couple of hours before getting the connecting flight to Vietnam. After getting into the airport we were told to make our way to gate 21 where we would be taken to a hotel. We all assumed that this would be just for the 2 hours wait as it was the middle of the night and we the airport was closed. They loaded us on to a bus and drove us round the corner to a posh Novatel Hotel. Once in reception we were told our plane was delayed by 8 hours and we were escorted by the service lift to a transit floor. This 8 hours was extended to 20 and then to 26 hours. All this time we were kept under ...

A height above the rest

Advantages: A great plane and flight
Disadvantages: Little

I have been very lucky and been able to travel all over the world with my parents. We have travelled to Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and many other destinations, and the airline we prefer the most is Singapore. Why is this?? For one simply reason the hospitality. I have yet to find an airline, which will treat you with as much respect even if you are not in First Class or Business. I have only been fortunate to fly Business Class only once and to tell you the truth the attitude towards me change little. The longest flight that I have taken with Singapore Airlines was 16 hours and this was to Singapore. The aircraft was both clean and well equipped, with a TV monitor in the back of every seat. Now I know that this is not the case on every plane, but for the long journey it made it ever more enjoyable. The stewards ...
