...is today times again rather coldly and rainy here in Munich and I prefer therefore the warm room to the Viktualienmarkt, I together-collected times all my knowledge over this market and told you of one of the most beautiful places in Munich.
I love my Munich much and decided to begin a report row over Munich in which I describe the individual high points of this beautiful city. That would blow up the framework in only one report absolutely. And in such a way it concerns today the resident of Munich Viktualienmarkt:
On 2 May 1807 King Max I. that Marienplatz had become too small as market for grain and other agricultural products. He instructed therefore that a part of the market between "Heiliggeistkirche" and "Frauenstraße" was to be shifted. The "Benefizhäuser of Heiliggeist", standing there, which had acquired the city, was torn off, so that a large place could develop. Thus the vegetable market got its own place, which was called first only market place. Only the word "Viktualien" was very many later used. Viktualien (victualia) - by the way like F spoken - is latin expression for food.
The History of the Viktualienmarktes in years:
But 1823 were too small already the market and in the years 1823 to 1829 were extended.
1885 were then torn off the obsolete Heiliggeist-Spital and the Heiliggeist-Kirche was increased. Now the market had a new face.
1852 bordered the market at the south end on the wall at that time.
1855 were settled the fish market and in the course of the time became the market ever more largely. The so called "Freibank", one bank-butcher-resounds in that the meat of emergency-slaughtered animals was sold, was built. On the place bread sales shops, shop fittings and pavilions for the fruit sales followed. Also the "Nordsee" fishery got a it's own resounds.
In 2. World war suffered the Viktualienmarkt much. To give up it thought about it the market completely and establish on this valuable reason and soil in the middle in the city of multistoried buildings. But the city administration Munich money gave in addition the Viktualienmarkt with substantial financial means, so that it could continue.
1970 were opened in the heart of the market a large beer garden. Like that it is possible to buy good food themselves its "Schmankerl" from the market and to enjoy it immediately with for fresh measure beer in the shade of the Kastanien. The characteristic of this beer garden is that all residents of Munich breweries come in the bar to the course. A brewery their supply and the next terminates every 6 weeks may the bar deny.
Since 6. November 1975 is the Viktualienmarkt pure pedestrian zones.
Today the Viktualienmarkt is point of main attraction for native ones and tourists. It is a place of the meeting and the contemplative. The residents of Munich citizens established an intending well in each case for the Komiker Karl Valentin and Weiß Ferdl. Also Liesl Karlstadt, which liked once to singer, actress. Liesl Karlstadt and Karl Valentin arose together on the stage. The wells of the two folk actors are always decorated with fresh flowers. Later still the intending wells for the people singers and Comedian Ida Schumacher, Elise Aulinger and Roider Jackl were added.
Already long the original farmer market became the popular purchase place for humans with fine taste. On a total area of 22,000 square meters today by altogether 140 companies fruit, vegetables, tropical fruits, flowers, herbs, game, poultry, eggs, butter, honey, fish, meat and sausage are sold.
In the meantime it is a tradition that on the Viktualienmarkt determined meetings take place. Thus enjoy the "dance of the market women" about carnival Tuesday at 11 o'clock in the morning, annual prominent cradles, the farmers day, the gardner day and the opening of the asparagus season of large popularity with residents of Munich and tourists.
At the edge of the Viktualienmarkt are historicalpregnant residents of Munich of pubs, which are inside very frequented particularly on the colder days. On sunny days tables and chairs admit most restaurants in front and the sun-hungry visitors to take this offer gladly. Thus there is e.g. the so-called "Bratwurstherzl", into whose 300 years an open grill stands for old gewoelbe on the among other things also original Nuernberger of bratwuerste is roasted. In addition there is fresh Hacker-Pschorr Bier or Frankenweine of the Graf Schoenborn. Sunday and holiday closed the "Bratwurstherzl", but on the remaining days it is opened of 10.00 o'clock to 23,00 o'clock. Then there is still the "Valentinstueberl"! It is a Bavarian, international, cosy-traditional hotel with terrace. Here you gets a board-pointedly just as as "Rahmschwammerl with Semmelknoedel" or pig liver "sourly" with roasting potatoes. And naturally here daily fresh Munich white sausages (Münchner Weißwürste) with Brezn and Haendlmaier mustard are served. All still too much moderate prices. However this hotel is closed also at sunday and holidays. Opened it on the remaining days of 10.00 o'clock to 23,00 o'clock.
I'm a original Munich Child and I love the Viktualienmarkt naturally very much. On sunny Friday afternoons there is nearly nothing more beautiful for me to stroll a few Delicate meal buy than over the market and it at home to a fine meal to prepare. And because it is today times again rather coldly and rainy here in Munich and I prefer therefore the warm room to the Viktualienmarkt, I together-collected times all my knowledge over this market and told you of one of the most beautiful places in Munich.
Advantages: Very good meal, nice service, mad atmosphere Disadvantages: Not very cheaply!
Last year I discover a new highlight on the MunichViktualienmarkt.
Fish Witte had cultivated!
So evenly also the new and extremely chice restaurant, which borders equal to the fish shop Witte.
The Innkeeper of fish Witte, Mrs. Hella Witte, are came the idea, the fish shop, which she operates together with their man for 20 years to increase with a restaurant.
By Fish Witte I take lunch in former times a jumbo fishroll. And I always already found it very cosy with friends or colleagues to stand at the old tables and at completely particularly beautiful noontime a small glas of wine to my fish roll.
Fish Witte, is an institution on Viktualienmarkt. Differently than with "Nordsee". Mrs. Witte has always a prescription idea in stock, if you buys fish. And in such a way it did not lie far to also still freshly offer ...
Advantages: A bit of everyhing - museums, parks, palaces, shops, often great weather, ich darf da Deutsch reden Disadvantages: Tourist numbers soar in summer and at the Oktoberfest
the exhibits, and the elevated ground floor has a ticket office cum small shop. The Neues Rathaus is the reason crowds gather daily at 11am and 5pm. They?re there to watch the Glockenspiel, the fancy clock with the dancing figures. If you?re the betting type, and like to take advantage of poor little Japanese tourists (and it is always, without doubt, the Japanese), you might like to know that when the knights fight, the Bavarian (blue and white) one, always, without fail, beats the Austrian (red and white) one.
The last thing worth seeing around this area is the Viktualienmarkt ? Munich?s ?rustic heart?. Reminiscent of Vienna?s Naschmarkt it is a large open air market selling food, flowers and handicrafts. If you head along the road between the old and new town halls, you come to the Residenz, the former home of Bavarian Kings, now a museums ...

Advantages: Beautiful City, Great Food, Wonderful Museums, Close to Alps Disadvantages: Too Many Tourists In The Summer
of first-rate enclosed and open-air food markets in the city. The Viktualienmarkt, Munich's oldest and largest open-air market, is little short of a Foodie-Paradise, with no less than 22,000 square metres of cheese, fresh fruit, seafood, and countless local beers and sausages to sample, as well as flowers and handcrafts. A couple of other exceptional markets include the Dallmayr & the Elisabethmarkt, named after an Austrian Empress. Much levity surrounds the Elisabethmarkt's so-called 'Milch-huette', or 'Milk Hut', originally founded to provide an alternative to alcoholic beverages, and to keep public drunkenness in check, but since converted into a rather rowdy beer-garden?
ATTRACTIONS: Rowdy beer gardens aside, one of Munich's greatest attractions is the Englischer Garten, a wonderfully extensive, all-round open space near the cities ...
