I stayed in the Village Hotel & Leisure Club in Bury in February 2004. Bury is about 10 miles away from central Manchester. And I wouldn’t say it’s “an ideal location to visit the sights and sounds of Manchester city centre” as the hotel website says. To get to the city centre you either have to use taxis all the time or take a bus to Bury railway station first and then get a tram to Central Manchester. The total journey time is 50 minutes and this is providing you don’t have to wait for a bus.
Checking in was quite easy. Form filled in, facilities explained, etc. My room was pretty clean but not particularly spacious. Two beds occupied most of the room, then there was a table, bedside table, wardrobe, mirror, TV, tea/coffee making facilities, ironing board, telephone. My room was overlooking a field so it was very quite which I really appreciated after a long working day. The bathroom looked clean but smelt of sewage. Either I am too meticulous or I always get weird bathrooms with blocked drainage or faulty taps. The towels were white but didn’t look impeccably clean. A usual supply of soap, shampoo or shower gel was in place – so I can’t complain about that.
The next morning breakfast in Salinger Bar was good. A usual choice of full English or continental plus juices, fruit, etc. The service was quick, too.
A walk-in rate is 92 pounds per person per night, but because the client I was working for is a regular customer they managed to get a rate of 72 pounds including breakfast.
Unfortunately, because of a tight working schedule I was not able to check out their sport and club facilities which include:
- swimming pool - Whirl pool spa - Sun showers and Sunbeds - Squash - Sauna & Steam Room
Would I stay there again? Yes, if I am not paying the bill….
