I am not a great one for holidays myself but there was something about the advert for a cruise around the Maldives that caught my eye. After a few years of a very hectic and demanding job (and having just finished a period of studying as well) I knew deep down that I needed to get away from it all. Nothing really appealed until I saw a colour photo of the Maldive islands and read the blurb in an advert.
It offered a week's cruise around various islands staying on a small boat and visiting a different island every day, some of which were described as uninhabited. There was a warning that the cruise wasn't suitable for anyone with mobility problems due to the need to transfer on to small boats in order to come ashore at some of the islands and somehow the more I read the more enthusuastic I became. Other tips are taking some bottled water for the boat transfers, as some may be lengthy. e.g. if staying on Kuredu, I recommend that you pay extra for the sea plane transfers as the boat transfers are 5+ hours too long a transfer after a long flight. The seaplane is an experience in its self and well worth the cost about £80-£100. It took us 40mins on the seaplane.
Its worth taking a plug in repellent with you if you are normally bitten, however most islands are sprayed weekly for prevention. The Island shops sell a bottle of insect repellent (in a pink plastic bottle) and its ...

Advantages: Warm water, clear, lots of life Disadvantages: Some dives not that exciting
'm not reviewing the boat or company but there were some concerns about how the boat was being run; it was a great boat in terms of size and layout but the organisation surounding some of the dives could have been much better.
We only did one night dive which was a bit of a disappointment for me; I think this is partly related to the strong currents around the Maldives and the unsuitability of certain sites for night dives, but it would have been nice to have more options for this.
As for what we saw - plenty of mantas on those 2 dives; several white-tip reef sharks, a group of 7-8 eagle rays, the odd grey reef shark in the distance. It was better for macro - lots of anemonefish on very colourful anemones; moray eels all over the place, swarms of small blue triggerfish! There were quite a few turtles over the course of the week ...
