It has been almost ten years since I last travelled with Virgin long before the days that I knew of Ciao existence, probably before I even knew about the existence of "tinternet" and on this trip I had little choice over the airline as the whole holiday was booked with Virgin Holidays. Given that it was a nine hour flight I was quite happy to be going with an airline that has a good safety record, is known to be customer service focused and being a scheduled airline would mean an extra inch or so of leg room.

I was bitterly disappointed on the return trip not to be offered an upgrade, given that I was celebrating the 14th occurrence of my 29th birthday my subtle hints were greeted with a stony silence, the final hint of "Oi trolley dolly what about an upgrade?" didn't do the trick at all.

Booking with Virgin was via the phone and the flight to Havana was out of Gatwick, not my favourite airport as it is a pain to get to and basically pretty crap as well. However on the plus side Virgin do make every effort to reduce the amount of time you have to spend in the airport on the day you fly, which is a good thing as the owners of Gatwick try to do everything possible to extend your stay but that is for another review. I took advantage of the fact that with Virgin you can check in online anytime between 24 hours and 2 hours before your flight departs. You will then be allocated your seat numbers (however these can get changed on the day of flight). All you need is your booking reference and your passports as they will collect personal information like that.

Using this service means that you avoid the long check in queues and instead merely have to take your bags to a "bag drop" desk which only takes a couple of minutes and then you are free to tackle the security process at Gatwick. I really liked this idea, we knew we had window seats and also that we were all sat together, although with my kids that is hardly a plus for me, and it does reduce the time you need to get to the airport in the morning. They also offer the facility to do a twilight check in when up to 9.00pm the night before you can check in and leave your luggage at the airport, this sounds good if you are staying in a local airport hotel and can make the next morning a lot easier but it was not convenient for me.

Our flight left on time on the outward journey but was forty five minutes late departing on the homeward journey however this we were told was due to strong head winds on the flight over. Overall both flights were well operated, the cabin itself was very clean as were the toilets and they were well maintained during the flights. On the return journey there was a distinct lack of in flight magazines which meant guessing what film was on which channel a bit of a lottery. When I enquired about getting one the flight attendant was super helpful explaining the shortage and the fact that the movies showing did not relate to the content anyway however she would locate me one, then she left never to be seen again.

The in flight entertainment was really good actually, you have a little screen in the back of your seat and head phones provided, there were 16 video channels to choose from, twelve showing various movies and there was a good selection. I got to see No Country for Old Men which was pretty good and Hitman which was not so great. There was lots of choice for the kids who both spent the return journey staying up all night watching films and then the minute we hit the tarmac at Gatwick and had to taxi for twenty minutes promptly fell asleep. In addition there were three channels showing TV shows like Little Britain and the final one showed the planes progress on a changing graphic. All of the channels were on a permanent loop however they all started at the same time so some were blank for a while.

The service on the flight was pretty good, they did run out of one of the meal options on the return flight by the time they got to us and the food was pretty standard although with a couple of nice touches. A GU dessert pot was yummy and my daughter loved the fact that she got a choc ice midway through the outbound flight. However she could not understand why she did not get one in the middle of the night flight home. Some kids are never satisfied.

The attendants were all very polite however I felt that the crew on the outbound flight were a little less so and seemed more preoccupied on what they would get up to once the arrived in Havana, the flight home was far busier given the delays and the staff coped really well. Now I'm about to do a little sexist commentary so skip the next few lines if you are a bit of a bunny boiler. What I did notice is the fact that the growing obesity problem in the UK has also found its way into the Virgin cabin crew as a couple of the flight attendants were on the chunky side. Now I'm hardly what you would call svelte but I do expect my air hostesses to fit the fantasy role portrayed in many fine "special interest" films I have heard about but this was not the case. The return flight was much better and they were what I expected, slim, unattainable for someone like me and only interested in the rich bloke in upper class. To be honest the staff were really efficient and a couple in particular really did spend time with the customers making sure they were comfortable.

On the whole Virgin run a pretty efficient operation. I'm not sure exactly what the price was like as the flight was part of a package however upgrades to premium economy were going to cost an additional £400 one way per person and the upgrade to first class was £1,400 both of which I declined. The in flight goody bag had comfort sock which I love to wear and also an eye mask which I found quite irritating to wear and I soon abandoned. The seats were as comfortable as they are likely to be, the fact that the head rest was adjustable helped get a decent sleeping position and for a shorty like me the leg room was fine. Flying is the one time I like being short and can look at the cramp six footers with a smug satisfaction.

I would definitely fly Virgin on a long haul flight again, they offer a good service and overall they are an airline you can trust with regards to safety and comfort.

I’d agree with most of that. It’s a couple of years since I flew with Virgin, but I was so impressed at the time, that they are my benchmark and no-one else has yet come close. Lx

Why would you get an upgrade with an attitude like that?

I won't fly with anyone else. Xen xx
