Vlieland is the smallest of the Dutch Wadden islands and by far the loveliest. Cars may be owned by permanent inhabitants only, which makes the island an oasis of peace. With the exception of the far western part (Vliehorst) which is a drill-ground for the Dutch airforce.
The only (small) village lies at the south-east coast of Vlieland, where the ferry from the mainland arrives. The village has all the supplies the inhabitants and tourists need, plus hotels, pubs and restaurants. Cyclist have a (small) paradise here with specially built cycle paths through the dunes: 28 kms long.
For sun lovers the island has a vast beach that starts immediately next to the marina, which is situated at 1 km to the east of the village.
Vlieland is the fardest Dutch island from the mainland, two hours by ferry from Harlingen. From Texel in the summer Vlieland can be reached with a small pedestrian ferry ("De Vriendschap") which moors at the Vliehors, from where travellers are being transported in a special truck to the village.
If you're only looking for a brief acquaintance with Vlieland and the other Wadden Islands, you might enjoy island hopping with special cycling tour operators like wadfietsen.nl or fiets-fun.nl (fiets is Dutch for bycicle).
