Advantages: I liked the souqs Disadvantages: Poor people around
...MEKNES. Of the 3 imperial cities, Meknes is probably the less visited/famous. To be honest, I agree with this ranking, although I also believe that Meknes is definitively worth a visit. The area surrounding the city is very fertile and heavily cultivated. As with other large cities in Morocco, Meknes suffers from too many people from the countryside trying to find a job in this town, and ending up living a hard life. The old city is quite large. The area with the souqs was my favourite, although we made the mistake of entering the shop of a carpet seller and only managed to leave after we had bought a small carpet! The carpet is nice and still in good shape after 5 years, but I suspect we had been overcharged....

Advantages: The sites are amazing, with the size of this Roamn site quite breathtaking. Disadvantages: Hassale from the locals all the time.
...When I went on a backpacking holiday with some of my Uni friends, we ended up at Volubilis one mid-morning. There was only one hotel near the site. A five star hotel that has had Prince Charles stay. We managed to get room and two meals, evening and breakfast for the equivalent of £12 a night. This was partly due to haggling, and it also was out of the tourist season, and the hotel was therefore empty. The rooms where pleasent, with hot showers and western toliets, this is a big luxary for westerners. The pool was empty though, due to it being out of season. The meals were faboulous and very filling, there was a mixture of Western and Moroccon food available, and at breakfast the possiblity of an English Fry Up. This was much loved by us all, after being on the road for 10 days without and such luxary.
The roman site is huge...

...I spent 1 night in the campsite in Ifrane in the middle of August. This was not a brilliant idea. Ifrane was built by the French as a ski resort, so it has a very European feel to the buildings and layout. The coolness of the place was very pleasant after the heat of the plains. However in August Moroccans camp out here and the campsite was very crowded, and not too hygienic, and expensive for just a tent and car. The place seemed very odd to me not Moroccan at all, I would recommend the town for its novelty value but that is about all. Try the campsite at Meknes instead....
