I left for Australia when I was 20. I went alone and for the entire flight I was so excited but when I actually arrived I spent my first night in tears, I actually almost got on the next flight home. The next day I sorted myself out and said I have to give it at least a week. That night I went down to the Side Bar, had y 3 dollar meal and a beer. I looked around and saw that everyone was in the same boat. After another beer I plucked up the courage to talk to some people. By the end of the night we were dancing on tables! I ended up staying at Wake Up for 3 months and had the best time. The staff were brilliant and always willing to help whether its finding a job, apartment, tourist advice or providing entertainment. The rooms are bright and clean and the bathrooms were always perfect. You can book double rooms, triple or rooms for up to 6 people. The food was fine with a wide range of options and the drinks cheap - very cheap. The bar always had different things going on from games nights (I will never forget riding around the square bar on a toddlers bike with a beer in one hand) to dancing, pool tournaments and the famous route 69. The hostel was also really good and helping to arrange day trips and sporting activities, often with group bookings at discounted rates. I wouldn't recommend for families as it's quite a fast paced hostel but having said that the staff would do anything to accommodate. My 3 months at Wake Up were exactly what I needed to set me up the the rest of my time in Sydney. I made some amazing friends and we always went back to the Side Bar for a fun night out.
