This rustic family restaurant is 2 minutes from the Zermatt train station. Walliserkanne is divided into three main dining rooms and a second restaurant in the basement. The elegant rooms are large and feature paintings by local artists on the walls. The restaurant offers a delectable menu of Italian dishes such as antipasto misto della casa (variety of Italian starters), carpaccio d'agnello con rucola e parmigiano (thin slices of raw lamb served with arugula and Parmesan), or vitello tonnato (slices of roast veal with tuna fish sauce). Pizzas and pastas round out the succulent fare. The menu also offers a wide choice of desserts.
Advantages: Scenery and skiing Disadvantages: Isolation of the town
...The train ride up to Zermatt begins with a glorious trip through the streets of Brig. The train climbed steadily upwards but due to the poor weather, my view was obscured. When I arrived in Zermatt I noticed that it was car free, which adds to the quiet and cosy atmosphere. But one has to be carful of the electric carriages, which ferry people to their hotels. Zermatt is a really beautiful town and as the large snowflakes it really created a cosy atmosphere.I decided to visit to Zermatt due to its rave reviews in the guidebooks and I totally agree with their opinions. But there are a few drawbacks the town is totally centred around skiing so there is little opportunity for any other activities, though the ski runs looked brilliant. The other disadvantage is the isolation of Zermatt, which makes forays into the rest of Switzerland...

Advantages: Superb scenery, classic Switzerland, no cars Disadvantages: Expense!
...Zermatt is in the southern part of Switzerland and is reached via Rail or Car. However if you bring the car be prepared to leave it parked a couple of miles out of town and use the electric vehicle service to get to Zermatt. No petrol/desiel vehicles allowed in town.
Zermatt is straight from the holiday brochure picture scene with large wooden faced chalets/hotels everywhere. Hiking out of the town quickly brings to to Heide country with many walking trails.
It is possible to hike to glaciers and back comfortably in one day.
The pictures of the Matterhorn with clouds whisping around the summit are still etched in my mind.
The place is extremely expensive (more so than even other parts of Switzerland).
I would recommend visiting Zermatt in summer as I did....

Advantages: Fantastic Food, shops, atmosphere, scenery and snow Disadvantages: Nothing compared to the advantages
...“Zermatt is a place all skiers must go to before they die” Well, the guide books that state that are spot on. It’s that time of year again, when keen skiers & boarders start to think about their next winter holiday, and where it should be this year. Well, if you haven’t tried Zermatt, Switzerland, then this resort should be near the top of your list. It’s simply excellent. I have been there several times, and love it. There’s a charm, a magic that runs through the lively and attractive village. The lifts are fast and efficient and the runs which take you through stunning scenery, seem to always be in excellent condition. Zermatts height affords the resort a fantastic snow record with skiing from early on in the season till mid April. The resort has three main mountains. Rothorn, Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn. All three offer fantastic...
