The Walsall Arboretum Illuminations

Where is it?

Walsall is in the West Midlands and the Arboretum is on the A461 out of Walsall travelling towards Lichfield.

What is it?
...a collection of trees and Walsall Arboretum originally stood on the southern boundary of the Cannock Forest! It is very hard to visualise that now with all the building that has taken place since that was the case!

On looking at the Walsall MBC website I have found out that The Walsall Arboretum first came into being 1871 and is was officially opened in 1874. The first Walsall Illuminations were held in 1951 as part of the Festival ... more

A little light in the black country

Advantages: Good park and ride. Excellent value. A lovely wy to spend an evening
Disadvantages: Can get very busy

My family and I have just spent a lovely evening at the illuminations, no not Blackpool - but Walsall. We were blessed with the weather, it was a warm and dry evening. What a surprise! The aboretum was ablase with colour. This years theme was 50 years of childrens t.v. so as well as all the nursery rhyme characters there was Bob the Builder, The Woodentops, Andy Pandy, Thunderbirds and The Tweenies to name but a few. A lot of the trees are lit with ...
...For the young children a small fairground will keep then amused and for the bigger children there are a couple of rides too. You can get a cup of tea or something more substansial, everything from the Black Country special 'Faggotts and Peas' to a baked potato to a burger and chips. A word of warning, it does get very busy and the traffic can be a problem. There is an excellent park and ride scheme or you could do as we did. Across the road from ...

The home of mad council disease

Advantages: Illuminations, Leather museum, market.
Disadvantages: Litter, mad council, yob culture

a tongue in cheek website, which has not impressed the Walsall councillors, at www.walsallwonderland.ic24.net. It even gives you the chance to destroy the statue on line! One of Walsall’s big successes is the Arboretum Illuminations, an annual event run by the Leisure Services department of the Council. (www.walsall-lights.com) There has been an arboretum on this site here in Walsall since the fifteenth century and it still boasts a huge variety of different trees. There is a large lake where boats can be hired and which forms the backdrop for some of the spectacular lighting displays at illumination time. There is also a smaller lake and both of these were formed after the abandonment of limestone workings in the area. When I was a child I remember that the story was that the lake was bottomless. I believed this in my naïve way until ...

Noddy Holder meets Diana Princess of Wales

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: See op

- just one of those things I think lol). The final thing that us Walsallers can boast about are our illuminations. You see, if you want to see some light shows and comedic cartoon characters in pretty lights, you don't necessarily have to go all the way to Blackpool - why go to the cold north west when you can come to Walsall and see much of the same without sitting on a coach in a traffic jam for 3 hours? ;) The Arburetum is probably Walsall's largest park and is situated 5-10 minutes walk outside the town centre. Every year between September and November - it hosts a large collection of lights and laser shows - with admission being around £3 (or at least it was a few years ago when I last went). There's also a large boating lake and the standard park features to explore. Blackpoolers will tell you that our illuminations are their cast ...
