The Walsall Arboretum Illuminations
Where is it?
Walsall is in the West Midlands and the Arboretum is on the A461 out of Walsall travelling towards Lichfield.

As the facility to set up a new product on Ciao doesn't work on my computer at the moment and the powers that be steadfastly refuse to help me by answering my e mails I came to be mooching around the site for ideas and came across this blast from my not too distant past.

What is it?
For those of you who don't know an arboretum is basically a collection of trees and Walsall Arboretum originally stood on the southern boundary of the Cannock Forest! It is very hard to visualise that now with all the building that has taken place since that was the case!
On looking at the Walsall MBC website I have found out that The Walsall Arboretum first came into being 1871 and is was officially opened in 1874. The first Walsall Illuminations were held in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain and even though the event only lasted a week it had over 200,000 visitors. They were even staged in 1975 despite the energy crisis!
In fact only two nights have ever been lost during the whole life of the illuminations; one was in 1998 when the lake flooded and burst its banks and the other was in 2002 when storm force winds damaged some of the trees making some of the pathways impassable.
The Illuminations
The Illuminations are staged each year during the month of October. The 2008 Illuminations will run from 26th September until 2nd November. Incidentally there are so many lights and features that the Parks Department begin work on the setting up during August!
Further details are available at http://www.walsall-lights.com/
The route of the illuminations is around the lake and central green in the arboretum and then up the walk to the extension where the swings are, although this area will be closed as it always is when it is dark.
The displays are quite varied and consist of the following:
There are lights both in the trees and illuminating them.
There are static tableaux and one with moving lights in them, such as circus trapeze artists jumping from swing to swing.
The lakes provide a backdrop to various pictures made from lights and of course there is the illuminated raft fountain which changes colour.
There is a laser display across the main lake which has been a regular feature since its introduction in 1989.
The features are updated each year to include new attractions, some of which actually come from Blackpool and some of which are made on site. They keep up with the children's favourites of the time such as Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, Pingu, Scooby Doo and the Teletubbies.
There are plenty of outlets selling food, drink and souvenirs and toilets are available on site. There are also a few small fairground rides for the children.
Prices and Times
The illuminations are usually open from 6.45pm until 9.45 with slightly extended opening times on Saturday nights.
The admission charges in 2007 were £6 for adults and £4.50 for children over 3 years old and senior citizens.
There are various saving to be made by buying tickets in advance or by buying family tickets. There is also a park and ride service which is signposted from the town to save you having to try and park in town which as you might imagine is a nightmare on illumination nights!
Full details of the opening times and admission prices are available on the web site. It is worth avoiding the weekends if you can as it gets very crowded!
In Conclusion
I would certainly recommend Walsall Illuminations as a great night out whether you have children or not! I went most years from the age of about 6 until we left the Midlands when I was 47! In fact I remember when there was no admission fee and the visitors were asked to make donations in big wooden collecting boxes set around the route.
I also did a few stints working on the gate taking the admission money and laughing at each person who said' Do you light up and go round and round?' - I wish I had £1 for everyone who asked that one! It was good fun though and a bit of extra pocket money coming up to Christmas.
One final bit of information coaches come from all over the country to see the illuminations - even from Blackpool!
This category does not appear in the search for Walsall or the search for Illuminations! Why does Ciao bother with a search engine - does anyone know?
Advantages: Good park and ride. Excellent value. A lovely wy to spend an evening Disadvantages: Can get very busy
My family and I have just spent a lovely evening at the illuminations, no not Blackpool - but Walsall. We were blessed with the weather, it was a warm and dry evening. What a surprise! The aboretum was ablase with colour. This years theme was 50 years of childrens t.v. so as well as all the nursery rhyme characters there was Bob the Builder, The Woodentops, Andy Pandy, Thunderbirds and The Tweenies to name but a few. A lot of the trees are lit with ... ...For the young children a small fairground will keep then amused and for the bigger children there are a couple of rides too. You can get a cup of tea or something more substansial, everything from the Black Country special 'Faggotts and Peas' to a baked potato to a burger and chips. A word of warning, it does get very busy and the traffic can be a problem. There is an excellent park and ride scheme or you could do as we did. Across the road from ...

a tongue in cheek website, which has not impressed the Walsall councillors, at www.walsallwonderland.ic24.net. It even gives you the chance to destroy the statue on line!
One of Walsall’s big successes is the Arboretum Illuminations, an annual event run by the Leisure Services department of the Council. (www.walsall-lights.com) There has been an arboretum on this site here in Walsall since the fifteenth century and it still boasts a huge variety of different trees. There is a large lake where boats can be hired and which forms the backdrop for some of the spectacular lighting displays at illumination time. There is also a smaller lake and both of these were formed after the abandonment of limestone workings in the area. When I was a child I remember that the story was that the lake was bottomless. I believed this in my naïve way until ...
- just one of those things I think lol).
The final thing that us Walsallers can boast about are our illuminations. You see, if you want to see some light shows and comedic cartoon characters in pretty lights, you don't necessarily have to go all the way to Blackpool - why go to the cold north west when you can come to Walsall and see much of the same without sitting on a coach in a traffic jam for 3 hours? ;) The Arburetum is probably Walsall's largest park and is situated 5-10 minutes walk outside the town centre. Every year between September and November - it hosts a large collection of lights and laser shows - with admission being around £3 (or at least it was a few years ago when I last went). There's also a large boating lake and the standard park features to explore. Blackpoolers will tell you that our illuminations are their cast ...
