We wanted something to do on Easter Sunday.I had seen an advert in the local press and on the internet for the new scary attraction at Warwick Castle. Being a lover of creepy things I suggested to the family that we give it a go.
The advertising had obviously worked as we queued for 45 mins to get into the car park and a further 20 mins to buy tickets. The place was absolutely heaving. Not a very good start to what eventually turned out to be a fantastic day. Bearing in mind it was a bank holiday and the cars parks were full, once inside the crowds seemed to disperse to all area's and did not seem overcrowded.
The castle itself is very impressive, teaming with history and wonderful stories. Helped along by an array of employees in costume - guards, jesters, musicians, peasants &
gentry. All playing their parts very well and keen to give you interesting information about the castle. The 'Count & Countess of Warwick' singled out my younger son for a chat, after a hilarious mix of medievil and modern day chat they decided the poor boy had an 'addled' mind and was very disrespectful as he didn't bow and stood with his hands in his pockets. The Knight in full armour on a huge horse was a splendid sight.
GHOSTS ALIVE
Is the newest attraction and costs an additional £2 per person to experience. Its situated in the Ghost Tower and is a recreation of a tragic murder that took part in the tower, using a mix of live actors, sound and lighting effects. Only small groups are allowed through at a time and the whole experience lasts just a few minutes. You are given a timed ticket to avoid queues.
Whilst waiting to be let in we were informed by a staff member that the previous day 160 people paid their money but were too scared to go in.
( We had visited a similar attraction at Madam Tussauds in London called ' Serial Killers Alive' which left my 12 year old shaking and speechless for almost an hour - due to being chased down a dark tunnel by a zombie like serial killer with a knife who threatened to eat him!)
We were ushered in a small group to the top of the stairs, where my sons took one look at the hooded corpse like figure cowering in the doorway and ran back down the stairs to join the ranks of the 'scared to go in people.'
My husband and I bravely continued into the tower along with the rest of the party. It was very dark with a geat deal of dry ice mist. A small fast ghost like figure was darting around in the darkness growling & hissing as we all fumbled along tring not to tread on each other. There was a short reactment of the story and murder, although I must admit most of my attention was focused on establishing the whereabouts of the growling hissing creature. I did enjoy the experience it definately got your heart pumping. Although I must say the Madam Tussauds one is a lot scarier.
ROYAL WEEKEND PARTY
I loved this part. Two storey's of state appartments with all the original furniture and fittings. Absolutely crammed with interesting objects from the past. The scene was set with the recreation of a party held in 1898 with wax models, including WinstonChurchill & Edward Prince of Wales. An employee was present in each room answering questions and bringing interesting things to our attention.
THE KINGMAKER
Another reconstuction using wax models, sounds and smells. This one depicts Richard Neville Earl of Warwick preparing for battle in 1471. Interesting with very realistic models.
THE RAMPARTS WALK
Fantastic views across Warwickshire are your reward for walking up hundreds of steps. It's worth the effect but not for the unfit.
Also worth seeing - Dungeons, Torture Chamber, Armoury, Victorian Rose Garden, The Mound. Peacock Garden and Conservatory.
There is also a lovely little mill and engine house in the grounds.
SPECIAL EVENTS
While we were there we saw Archery, Falconry and various small shows by jesters and musicians. There are events and displays throughout the year. These are all listed on the website www.warwick-castle.co.uk
The prices vary throughout the year. We paid £36 for a family ticket plus £2 each for Ghosts Alive.
There is a guidebook for £3.95. I can't comment on it as we didn't buy one. The free map and events timetable we were given on entry had all the information we required.
There was also an audio tour available for £2.95.
