DULLES AIRPORT - WASHINGTON DC
Advantages: A Gateway to the United States Disadvantages: for me personally - none
DULLES AIRPORT - WASHINGTON DC - UNITED STATE of AMERICA There were 400 passengers on our flight and we all disembarked at the same time to be greeted by a voice shouting out a number from 1 to 10 and pointing to a door we were politely but abruptly ushered in a orderly fashion into what seemed like small rooms with seats in, as we sat waiting the doors closed and the room began to raise into the air and move forward, it turned out to be an inter-terminal ... ...and hospitality. After about twenty minutes we had arrived at the terminal building and informed that our luggage was arriving on carousal Number 8. I think we watched most of the worlds travelling populations luggage arrive before at last, ONE of our cases turned up. Thinking the worst, we watched and waited, and low and behold our other case appeared.
Now, we are entering one of, if not the most secure countries in the world. So with trepidation ...

Doin' the Smithsonian
Advantages: Magnificant collection of human acheivement in art, science, and culture Disadvantages: Never enough time
...looking a bit confused, "the Smithsonian Museum."
"Yes," I continued patiently, "but which one?"
The substance of this exchange is all too common. Most people living outside the Washington metropolitan area probably think of the Smithsonian as simply "a museum." In fact, the Smithsonian Institution is a collection of several great museums (many, but by no means all, are located along the National Mall), plus a number of educational and research ... ...Officially, it is a Smithsonian “affiliate.”) The girls also knew that the National Museum of History and Technology (now the National Museum of American History) had the best ice cream parlor in town (alas, now replaced by the Constitution Café)--as well as an opportunity to gander at Fonzie's jacket. They learned about the rich diversity of American culture at the National Folklife Festival, an annual event on the National Mall sponsored by the ...

Well hello Mr Lincoln!
Advantages: Free, interesting, historical Disadvantages: Not that much to see
...sites. I think the Lincoln memorial is one of the iconic symbols of Washington and so was high on our list.
SOME HISTORY:
As a History teacher I always feel I should add a little information here! The Lincoln memorial commemorates Abraham Lincoln (yes the clue was in the title!). Abe (to his friends) was the 16th President of the USA and is famous for many reasons, most notably, getting assassinated! He was also President during the American Civil ... ...on it. Lincoln himself sits in the middle and is around 6 metres tall and 6 metres wide. Needless to say he makes his presence felt. He is carved from marble. You can't get too close to Abe as he is surrounded by barriers.
There is an absolutely tiny shop to the left as you look out of the memorial. It sells books and posters to do with the Memorial, Lincoln, Martin Luther King and general American History. I picked up some postcards and copies ...

Another must see in Washington
Advantages: Historical, interesting, moving Disadvantages: None
...it is the turn of Arlington National Cemetery. This is America's national cemetery for military personnel and I think it is another one of those places which is a must see for anyone visiting DC.
GETTING THERE:
The cemetery is based just outside DC itself, on the other side of the Potomac River. There is plenty of public transportation which goes there, including the metro (get off at Arlington National Cemetery - I know - logical for America!!). ... ...was $27 each for the Arlington and DC parts combined. I would highly recommend this as it gives you lots of information, gets you close to the attractions and you can get on and off as many times as you want in the day.
The cemetery opens at 8am every morning (including Christmas). In the summer months (Apr.-Sept.) it closes at 7pm and in the winter months (Oct.-Mar.) it closes at 5pm.
SOME HISTORY:
Here comes my obligatory history section! Arlington ...

A Native Longing Begets "A Native Place"
Advantages: Beautiful structure, respectful approach, serves to honor our Native peoples Disadvantages: Long past due
...this case, it was the National Museum of the American Indian. As charter members of the NMAI who happen to live in the far-flung Washington area, Himself and Yours Truly were invited to an after-hours reception held as part of the inaugural festivities. The reception was complete with well-stocked stations for food and drink on three levels of the museum and included both hard and soft beverages--which one might decently argue against, given what ... ...remaining museum site along the National Mall, the realization of that strategy can be said to begin with the structure itself--and the landscaping that surrounds it. The new NMAI was always intended to serve as "A Native Place," and its architects and designers spared no effort to measure up to the challenge. Thus the museum is built of a warm golden stone that sparkles in the sunlight like the adobe of a Southwestern pueblo. The stone has been ...
