Another must see in Washington
Advantages: Historical, interesting, moving Disadvantages: None
...it is the turn of Arlington National Cemetery. This is America's national cemetery for military personnel and I think it is another one of those places which is a must see for anyone visiting DC.
GETTING THERE:
The cemetery is based just outside DC itself, on the other side of the Potomac River. There is plenty of public transportation which goes there, including the metro (get off at Arlington National Cemetery - I know - logical for America!!). ... ...was $27 each for the Arlington and DC parts combined. I would highly recommend this as it gives you lots of information, gets you close to the attractions and you can get on and off as many times as you want in the day.
The cemetery opens at 8am every morning (including Christmas). In the summer months (Apr.-Sept.) it closes at 7pm and in the winter months (Oct.-Mar.) it closes at 5pm.
SOME HISTORY:
Here comes my obligatory history section! Arlington ...

A haunting memorial
Advantages: Memorable, historical, free Disadvantages: None
...this review is about the Korean War Memorial. I think that if you go to Washington and only see one memorial (there are a lot!) then this should be the one that you see…..and here's why.
SOME HISTORY
The Korean War lasted from 1950-1953. It is not a war that gets talked about a lot, mainly because everyone concentrates on the Second World War which had only been over for five years and the Vietnam War. The War broke out when the Communist regime ... ...Lincoln Memorial, parking near the Korean Memorial is almost impossible. There is parking available on the side of the road a little way of but due to my aunt recovering from a broken foot this wasn't an option for us. We got to the Memorial on a tour bus which was a great way of getting there as they drop you off much closer than you can get in your own car. The nearest metro stop is Foggy Bottom (hehehe - sorry immature I know!).
The Memorial ...

Well hello Mr Lincoln!
Advantages: Free, interesting, historical Disadvantages: Not that much to see
...sites. I think the Lincoln memorial is one of the iconic symbols of Washington and so was high on our list.
SOME HISTORY:
As a History teacher I always feel I should add a little information here! The Lincoln memorial commemorates Abraham Lincoln (yes the clue was in the title!). Abe (to his friends) was the 16th President of the USA and is famous for many reasons, most notably, getting assassinated! He was also President during the American Civil ... ...on it. Lincoln himself sits in the middle and is around 6 metres tall and 6 metres wide. Needless to say he makes his presence felt. He is carved from marble. You can't get too close to Abe as he is surrounded by barriers.
There is an absolutely tiny shop to the left as you look out of the memorial. It sells books and posters to do with the Memorial, Lincoln, Martin Luther King and general American History. I picked up some postcards and copies ...

Flight of Fancy
Advantages: Great Day out, educational Disadvantages: None
...well have wandered through the National Mall - the grassy area running through the centre of the city. At one end is one of the Smithsonian Museums, the National Air and Space Museum. This museum is part of that. It is however located about 25 miles away, right at the end of the runways of Washington Dulles International Airport.
The museum was built there to house many of the aviation artefacts that couldn't be located in the National Mall (like ... ...number of interlinked buildings/hangars
The Centre was named in honour of its major donor Stephen Udvar-Hazy who apparently donated $60 Million, and was opened in December 2003
*** What is there? ***
Basically anything to do with flying - Aircraft and Spacecraft . For me this is a great interest, as I used to work in the aircraft industry, so I have a bit of a soft spot for aviation related subjects.
Now I could go on to list all the aircraft ...

A Native Longing Begets "A Native Place"
Advantages: Beautiful structure, respectful approach, serves to honor our Native peoples Disadvantages: Long past due
...this case, it was the National Museum of the American Indian. As charter members of the NMAI who happen to live in the far-flung Washington area, Himself and Yours Truly were invited to an after-hours reception held as part of the inaugural festivities. The reception was complete with well-stocked stations for food and drink on three levels of the museum and included both hard and soft beverages--which one might decently argue against, given what ... ...remaining museum site along the National Mall, the realization of that strategy can be said to begin with the structure itself--and the landscaping that surrounds it. The new NMAI was always intended to serve as "A Native Place," and its architects and designers spared no effort to measure up to the challenge. Thus the museum is built of a warm golden stone that sparkles in the sunlight like the adobe of a Southwestern pueblo. The stone has been ...
