affordable - is right in Midtown Manhattan in New York, on West 51st Street, surrounded by the theaters of Broadway, the variety of Restaurant Row, and just minute...
...I went to NewYork, New York for the first time during the last week of March. I really enjoyed it, but I'm still paying it off! Too many shops led to far too much bending of the old plastic. Don't go there if you can't control your spending :-) The whole of 5th Avenue is just far too dangerous ;-)
First we stayed in a hotel on 57th street called The WashingtonJefferson, but it was a horrible dump. We booked it over the internet so we didnt really get much of an idea about it, and at $99 a night (for a single room), it was the cheapest would could find. We didnt stay there long and soon moved a bit further up town and found a great place called The Salisbury Hotel just opposite Planet Hollywood. That was infinately better!!! I recommend that hotel to anyone - it costs a bit more but the difference is amazing.

Advantages: lots! Disadvantages: expensive to get there!
...to get through immigration. We have young children and I usually have a new comic or other small new surprise to give to them during the long wait, it sometimes helps!
Washington is 5 hours behind the U.K. Once outside the airport taxis are plentiful and probably the easiest way to get to your destination. I would suggest you check the driver speaks English and knows the address you are giving him, as we once had a driver who spoke little English and got hopelessly lost, not uncommon in Washington!

Washington is an easy city to explore once you get the hang of the excellent metro system. . Situated on the eastern seaboard, 233 miles south of New York in the District of Columbia, Washington is divided into 4 districts, northwest, southwest, northeast and southeast. The southeast district is one to avoid as most...

Advantages: There are more expensive hotels... and you are in sight of the empire state building Disadvantages: Smokey, smelly... well I didn't enjoy handing my money over.
...The Hotel Stanford is in an area of New York known as little Taiwan. It is located on West 32nd Street, near Broadway and 5th avenue. The nearest landmarks are the Empire State building and Penn Station - each is about 2 blocks away.
Despite the fact that the street smells a bit fishy (due to the asian restaurants and generally bad management of rubbish in the city), the area is reasonable enough - it certainly felt safe.
The hotel is ok. Sadly it was not possible to get a non-smoking room and the ventilation system provided us with smoke from other rooms during our stay. The room itself was in mediocre repair - obviously not one of the refurbished ones (they're still refurbishing) and the $140 per night price tag would have bought something a hell of a lot nicer in a different city (say Philadelphia or Washington DC).

The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the... more
If you want to stay in Central New York then this is the hotel to book. It is actually IN Times Square! It's a huge modern hotel with over 45 floors so some of the views are great. There is a bar at the top which is a lovely place to have a drink,... more
Just got back from a lovely weekend in London and stayed at the the Washington Hotel in Mayfair. Do I reccommend this hotel - well it is good value. I booked direct from their website and it cost £89 plus VAT including full breakfast for two. This is for more
Postmodernism, eh? It's a funny old bag of fish. Even the holier-than-thou critics don't quite seem to know what it's all about. They argue whether it's
a) a revolt against modernism,
b) a progression of modernism,
c) both of these and more
or d) more
