My husband and I really needed a pre-Christmas break but we have a young baby so we knew finding the right place would be difficult. I'd seen the Waterhead Hotel when visiting Ambleside last Christmas and was reminded that I'd always wanted to stay there. My husband booked the hotel as a surprise so we could have a couple of days away.
The hotel is gorgeous! It's in a great location overlooking the lake and it's a good size - it's a medium-sized hotel - so it has all the amenities you'd want to see but still feels small and friendly. The decor of our room was really lovely - it's one of the only times I've seen a photo of a hotel room on the website and actually thought the room itself was BETTER. The room had a (tasteful!) fake open fire, a huge bed, a lovely bathroom with a brilliant shower, lots of storage space, real coffee, fresh fruit and complementary gingerbread (which was gorgeous). We had dinner in the hotel on the Friday night and the staff were brilliant about the baby - we just took him down in the Moses basket and popped him on the bench seat beside me and he slept through dinner! They also offer a baby-listening service if you prefer that, and they have travel cots you can request.
Dinner was beautifully cooked and presented and the waitresses were attentive and polite. The very slight criticism is that the portions are a bit on the small side, so relax into it and go for 3 courses!
Breakfast was really great - a fantastic choice of juice, cereals, toast, pastries, cold meat and cheese. We had an inclusive rate so went for the cooked breakfast. Great quality ingredients, again very well cooked and presented.
There are some really nice touches, like the DVD players in the rooms and the library of DVDs in the lobby (to watch on the plasma-screen TV). But the best thing is the attitude of the hotel staff and the rooms themselves. Both are great.
It's not cheap, but it is worth it, for a special break. There are various deals throughout the year, especially off-season, which would be better value!
