I'm a mum of 2 and although I no longer have regular work I do manage to do a bit of supply teaching to keep my skills up to date! I live in the sunny south where I grew up, close to my family and friends.

I used this company to book last years summer holiday, the first we'd had since having the kids. I was understandably excited and spent lots of time researching places to stay. I found the website and although it was the most user friendly I was able to find a cottage that was in Brittany and available at the time we wanted to go. I phoned up to book and check details and found them to be organised and helpful. I booked a 2 bed cottage with enclosed garden close to the see and amenities for the second week in September. I paid extra for a crossing that would suit our family and a cabin as it was overnight. Overall it cost about £1000 for the week but I didn't care as a week away was much needed. All the documentation came through promptly and there were no problems, until we got there… On arrival we were greeted by the French owners who were horrified to see that we had 2 small children. They then proceeded to lecture us for and hour and a half about what should and shouldn't be done and what the children should and shouldn't touch - in French! (my French isn't that great) They eventually left us alone but by then we were petrified that the kids would do something they weren't and were constantly on edge. So we decided to spend as much time out of the cottage as possible which was tricky as the weather was awful. We found the leaflets left in the cottage of things that are available in the local area and also went to the tourist information center in the village. But what we found was there was nothing suitable for children that was open at that time of year less than 2 hours away! In the end after a horrific accident by my 2 year old (that happened at the supermarket and left us in hospital for the day) we decided to cut our losses and go home. At least there the kids could play, and there were things open in the immediate are for us to do. Although some things were out of the control of welcome cottages I felt they made a couple of basic mistakes…
1) The property should have been listed as unsuitable for children (as many others are)
2) We should have been informed that many parts of Brittany close in September for the Winter
3) The property shouldn't have been listed as having an enclosed garden as it was actually a gravel/stone drive which was completely unsuitable for children to play on
I complained to Welcome cottages on arrival home about the points listed and to be honest they couldn't have cared less. The cottage is still listed as with garden and suitable for children so I'm sure others will be caught out too. We've not bought a caravan so this problem will never happen again!
