My boyfriend turned 30 a few weeks ago and for his present I booked us a trip to New York and the Wellington Hotel is where I picked for us to stay due to its central location in Manhattan.
Last Wednesday we flew out to NYC and checked into the Wellington.
If you didn't know already this is where part of the Borat film was made, the main scene being where he tries to unpack his things in the lift thinking its his room and so many Borat jokes ensued in the elevators during our stay.
The location of the hotel is amazing, its a 1 minute walk from Carnegie Hall, 2 minutes from Central Park and 5 minutes from Times Square and is located on the corner of 55th Street and 7th Avenue. The placement of the hotel was my favourite thing about it as it was just so easy to walk to some of the city's best attractions from here.
When we checked in the reception desk had 3 members of staff on hand so there was no queue and all the staff that I encountered very pleasant and always happy to help, bell hops were always on hand during the day and one at night too and the doorman was always very pleasant.
The hotel has a large lobby with sofas to rest on and from the lobby you can access the Molyvos restaurant which is a Greek restaurant and also has a bar inside if you just want drinks.
We did use the Molyvos bar but it was quite pricey so only went in there once as found cheaper bars nearby.
I cannot comment on the food as neither of us are keen on Greek cuisine.
The hotel also has its own cafe called The Park which serves breakfast, lunches dinners and snacks from 6am - 1am.
We ate breakfast in the cafe on one occasion and the meals were of a substantial size and very tasty, I had the sausage omelette but it was so big I could have shared it and my boyfriend had a small fried breakfast, the staff were pleasant in here and the service was very quick.
The hotel also has a hairdresser and gift shop and if you are hungry but want to stay in your room they offer room service from 6am - 12am but they do charge $3 per person who orders for this, my boyfriend ordered a beer so it ended up approx $10 for one drink.
Once we checked in we were told we had been upgraded to a Queen Suite free of charge but the room was of a size that I would expect a normal double (of which I had booked) to be, we did have a 32" LCD TV in the room though and a chest of drawers, desk and bedside cabinet.
The room was clean but the hotel has an overall old fashioned style decoration to it and our room was no different.
The view from our room wasn't amazing, it was of an apartment block next door but you could see 7th Avenue if you looked right.
The bathroom consisted of a toilet, sink and shower with a small bath underneath which would have been fine to bath a child in but not an adult as you couldn't like down and relax.
The bathroom was very clean and the maid service at the hotel was good, they phoned our room to check if we wanted the service or not which was a nice touch.
Our room was approx £144 per night divided over the 5 nights we stayed so not amazingly cheap but I felt a reasonable price for the location and service from the hotel.
One of the only negatives I had about the hotel is when I booked it said free wi fi access but I had to pay $20 for this, I didn't argue it as I didn't have confirmation with me but upon double checking I shouldn't have had to spend that.
I would recommend the hotel to anyone who wants to be in the heart of Manhatten and I would stay here again if I went back (which I hope to do one day!).
