I stayed at the Wellington hotel on my second trip to New York, and the decision was based on a recommendation from the Travel Agent.
There were a few people in reception when we arrived and it took about half an hour to be checked in. We had booked one double room and one twin room for our party but were told that there was no twin rooms available so we would have to have a double with a foldaway bed, which someone would bring to the room. When it arrived there was no way I would be sleeping on it as it seemed to be about 30 years old and ready to collapse at any minute. Fortunately I was staying with my sister so it wasn't really a huge problem that we shared a double bed.
I wasn't really happy with the room itself, it was small and the view was of an apartment building not even the street. It was in dire need of updating in the bathroom with rusty pipes clearly visible underneath the sink, and the tiles needing either replacing or regrouting, but it was clean and there was no repeat of the giant bug that I experienced at the Milford Plaza.
The location of this hotel is great, just a few minutes walk to either Central Park or Times Square and you could easily stand and hail a taxi. There are a number of deli's for food, notably the Park Cafe underneath the hotel or the Benash Deli across the street. There is the Molyvos Greek Restaurant right nextdoor but we never tried it so I can't comment on the food.
We stayed at the hotel for four nights and I while there was nothing terrible about it, I don't think I would stay here again.
I'm hoping to go to NY for the first time next year and this hotel is on the list of one's to consider. It's much better priced than other hotels and other reviews seem to be quite positive.
