Full review
Set on a hill overlooking Wellington's suburbs is an ideal home for a wide range of animals, birds, fish and even the shy, flightless kiwi, the nation's treasured, nocturnal bird.

There's an obvious focus on providing a natural environment for the animals with plenty of trees and other relevant features which the animals would enjoy in the wild.

While the `residents' are presented in the best condition for public enjoyment and education you can see that staff and management concentrate hugely on animal welfare and stimulation.

I've read some of the enterprising breeding programmes which go on at Wellington Zoo and this augurs well for some of the species which need a little help from man.

I've taken my children and grandchildren to Wellington Zoo and over the years it has improved hugely. They've all loved the little train which takes you around the lake and gives a glimpse into the world of the wild-foul.

Keen photographers will be happy-snappy with the digital camera when peeking into the mere-cats arena, get a photo while they are posing because once they decide to put on a show it's all fast frame from then on.

I have wasted a pic or two on my favourites, the giraffes. They are so haughty and when inspired they can be quite nosey.
Looking in through the primate window is a bit spooky when a baby gorilla suddenly appears within inches of your nose and delights you with his antics.

The lions allow you to get up close and personal, safely behind glass in a cave which adds authenticity to the time you spend admiring them sleeping or roaming around on the prowl.

Not sure how much it costs to go to Wellington Zoo nowadays but I do think any money you spend on taking the family there will be a good investment.

Get to Wellington Zoo by bus, which runs from the centre of the city , but if you take the car, be prepared to walk a way to get to the entrance.

Wellington is New Zealand's capital city, it's slogan is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE. Its zoo is quite honestly an Absolutely neat place where there is a POSITIVE effort to find a balance between providing a sensitive, natural environment for many types of animals, while educating and making them accessible to visitors and locals alike.
