Instead of staying at the Britannia Hotel, Shane and I decided to book a room over the Internet at the three-star West Bromwich Moat House Hotel, Birmingham. (Okay I was sick of no one answering the phone when I tried to book a room at the Britannia Hotel, so I went to a hotel that I had used in Birmingham before and found to be of a high standard in the past, West Bromwich Moat House Hotel). This hotel has one hundred and sixty eight bedrooms along with a large conference meeting centre facilities accommodating up to one hundred and eighty delegates.

This Moat House is perfectly situated for the M5 and M6 motorways, allowing easy access to the National Exhibition Centre, Hawthorne’s football stadium (West Bromwich Football Club) and of course the city centre.
On arriving you are greeted to ample car parking space. It is free to park but you need to pick up a token at reception when you want to leave the site. The barriers are now working but they have not worked for about two years prior to this visit. There are at least three disabled parking bays near the main entrance too, I never had to look for them anywhere else as there was always one free.

Reception is friendly and helpful. They efficiently book you in and take on board any request you may make for your stay, early morning calls, newspapers and the like. They will also arrange fans for the room and sort out room service requests. The hotel (at reception) can also offer pre-booking and reduce entrance rates to local attractions such as Cadbury World, Warwick Castle, West Midlands Safari Park, and Alton Towers. You will find information about these and other local attractions in you room.

The West Bromwich Moat House hotel is also an excellent place for conferences and meetings, with its seventeen conference and meeting rooms with a maximum capacity of one hundred and seventy people. It is ideally situated for the M5 and M6 motorways and is also close to the local railway station and tramlines (Wolverhampton to Birmingham). There are several conferences held here during the week and numerous wedding receptions throughout the weekend. One word of warning the hotel’s car park is used for football parking for the Hawthorn’s ground at weekends for the duration of the football season (home games). This is supervised though and does not affect the hotel resident. These are ‘home’ fans and who have special parking tickets.

There is a modern leisure complex, including swimming pool and gym called Club Motivation, there is also a separate fittest studio for aerobics and similar functions. In additional it also features a Sauna, Steam room, Solarium, Jacuzzi spa, Gymnasium, and Beauty Saloon. The prices here are very reasonable and I love to have some of the available treatments. I particularly enjoyed my Indian Head massage, bliss!

I really enjoyed my swim, as the water is heated to a pleasant temperature, which meant that my muscles did not cramp, or spasm. It was wonderful to be able to float and move without crutches or other artificial aids. There is plenty of shampoo, shower gel, body lotions, deodorants and cotton wool in the ladies changing rooms. (Not sure what is actually in the men’s as I have not been in there, although I am reliably informed by Shane that this is also the case in the ‘gent’s’). On duty is a personal trainer in the leisure centre when it is open and there is also television surveillance. Children are allowed in the pool but they are not allowed to use the spa therapies. You will need £1.00 for the lockers (returnable after use) but towels are free if you are a hotel resident.

**Cost**

The costs are per room per night and these rates are inclusive of a buffet Continental Breakfast (with cooked food too) at the Rafferty's Restaurant, taxes and service charge. The hotel also has its own restaurant, Rafferty's, for the residence enjoyment offers a carvery menu along with an a la carte one too in the evenings along with its large lounge and bar for relaxing in. If you do not want to leave your room them you can use the twenty-four hour room service. The sandwiches are huge and the garlic bread is very tasty. The food usually arrives within the time scale mentioned on ordering. My mouth is now watering at the thought of it.

Single Room: For one Adult is £68.00
Double Room: For two Adults, one double bed is £75.00
Twin Room: For two Adults with twin beds is £75.00
Triple Room: For three Adults is £102

There are corporate rates and global rates. Please contact the hotel is you wish to know more but I have only ever stayed using the leisure (above) rate. Each room has an En-suite bathroom and there are rooms for non-smokers. Each room has a direct-dial from bedroom along with sky television (limited channels) and Tea/Coffee making facilities too. If you upgrade to a Crown Package then you get the use of towelling gowns, filter coffee, fruit juice and spring water plus extra toiletries.

You can pay with cash or cheque but all the major Credit Cards are accepted American Express, Diners Club, JCB Card, MasterCard or Visa. So it is customer friendly here in the credit card department.

N.B. Children aged from 0 - 6 yrs old are free room only, when sharing with 2 adults in a double/twin room. This is a maximum of one child per family.

My real complaint about the rooms is the size. I had booked my reservation over the Internet and stating that I was disabled. However typically this information was lost, so we had a standard room, at the farthest point at the hotel on the 4th floor, from both the reception and the lifts. Not much fun! I wonder what would have happened to me if there had been a fire. I suppose I would be dead now! (Or Shane may add another slipped disc to his list!) I could not walk that far on my crutches so had to use a wheel chair. The bathroom was too small for my wheel chair; I could barely get in the room or for me to move round the room. How can you enjoy a visit like that? The hotel staff we lovely and I was refunded for my stay so I must admit it did help. (I am going to visit again this month and have been promised one of the newly refurbished disabled rooms. It has an adapted bathroom, on the ground floor. Well I will have to see how suitable it actually is! [See further update, maybe!])

Still sounds like a better bet than the Britannia... Mind you I was surprised you gave it five stars in spite of their ignoring your information that you were disabled. Mike

Sounds very nice, but aren't British hotels expensive. The Copthorne was very nice too. But going to the USA gets you a far better hotel and much cheaper too, oh yes, I forgot you have to get there first.

It's a pity they fell down on losing the information that you're disabled as I was beginnig to think you'd found perfection!
