The Notting Hill Carnival is run by Notting Hill Carnival Trust. The Trust receives grants mainly from the Arts Council, and income from some commercial sponsorships. The Carnival was started as a small procession by the London’s WestIndian community in 1966. This year (2001), the main procession on Monday had 60 floats, 10 steel bands and 20 Soca bands. ..., pianists and other easy listening music with a reggae band on the main sun deck (a little loud and with limtied repertoire I admit).
The Carnival Victory also featured a seperate jazz bar and a karaoke bar featuring a talented rotating pianist / singer.
The Carnival Legend was much more tastefully decorated than the disappointing Costa Atlantica (same ship design) though the Sensation was decked out in an awful gaudy purple interior trim which felt as though you were in a games arcade.
The choice of food on Carnival is outstanding with 24 hour pizza bar (it is biased towards the Americans) offering excellent pizzas, and lunch times offer a wide range of cuisine including freshly made sandwiches and Chinese food always on offer plus a wide variety of other nationalities on offer.

...to "fine dining" mainly from Mexico and the American Southwestern traditions. But the standard is high.
There is much to see from the old Indian (that's PC here, by the way!) way of life, including the time-warp town hall and museum, outside of which a hundred Pueblo Indian craftspeople sell their wares from blankets on the ground as they have done for 200 years and more. The museum itself is very good, being full of relics from AD 600 through the times of the Conquistadors to the "wild west" era.
Make sure you visit the cathedral (in the centre) and the the oldest church and house in the continental USA - they date from 1690 and are next to one another, some 1/4 mile from town - an easy walk....
