Where you go out at night really depends on what type of night out you want. If you’re full of adrenaline and you need a release - i.e. you need to party till you pass out, then you’ll be wanting to go to one of Birmingham’s many clubs and bars - loud music, cheap drinks and a good time. If, however, you want a quite night out with a good pint in your hand and your friends at your side for good conversation, then I suggest you give The Square Peg on Corporation Street a go.
The Square Peg is a Wetherspoonspub, and this guarantees you quality from the start. The pubs is quite big, with plenty of seating and plush furnishing and decoration. You really feel like you’re in a place that is well looked after, and it has a certain touch of class to it. It’s a homely atmosphere that exudes from every surface, and it’s all too easy to settle down without a second thought. And that, after all, is how a good pub should be.
The bar is the main feature, claiming to be one of the biggest in Europe, and it does stretch for a good distance. This is more handy than it may sound, because it means you can fit more pumps on the bar, more staff, and ultimately more space to stand while you’re waiting to order. It certainly helps. Talking of the staff, they are friendly and helpful, and you can tell they enjoy their jobs, and they are well trained - you’ll always get a good pint :)
It’s a great place to meet people - I do so frequently - and it also means that you can meet and settle down with a few of your friends have a chat over a good pint, or whatever your favourite tipple is. The range is massive, and you’re guaranteed to find something you want, and at a reasonable price too - a pint of Stella Artois at £1.99 for example!
As well as alcohol, Wetherspoons pubs also serve a variety of food to your table. The food is of the highest quality - I can recommend the Chicken Balti, a personal favourite of mine! The prices are not too bad, and there are more often than not some form of offers for you to take advantage of - like the infamous Beer and Burger deal, which is just what it says.
So lets look at what we’ve got - a nice classy pub, good beer, good food, good prices, good company - what more could you want? Well, a little ambient music might be nice, but then you get the problem that you have to have music to satisfy everyone, so it’s probably better without. Besides, who needs music - you’ve got your friends to talk to!
The Square Peg is an excellent pub, one of the best I’ve been to - I can’t fault it, and I certainly go there often enough. Maybe you should too!

Moon Under Water. Was the name given to a fictional pub in an essay on the ideal pub by George Orwell aka Eric Blair. Oddly enough, though dated (he wrote it in the 1940s) the Moon Under Water he wrote of sounded similar to the Wetherspoon chain! :o))

Great review great pub! Though I quite like the tiny one by the library, too. It used to be Hooters. But is now a Wetherspoons, thank the good Lord!
I really must get round to nipping in to the Lloyds No. 1 Bar, on Broad Street. They do music at them...
