I have really mixed feelings about JD Wetherspoons and feel i should try and explore them and come to a decision about wether they deserve our money.
As you take that apprehensive little step through the door you are consistently met with a relaxed and cosy ambience and it all feels..... very british and traditional. If you are anything like me you head straight for the bar and are pleased at the excellent choice and variety of drinks on offer ( alcoholic and non-alcoholic). You are even more pleased when you have paid and realise how cheap it all is (£ 1-95 for a cosmopolitan WOW! )
So there you are drink in one hand and menu in the other and you are bowled over by the choice and price of all the gastronomic wonders to be had. " Okay i'm gonna have the steak pie and veg, its only £5.95!, and look at the picture of it, it looks delicious ".
You head to the bar again (no table service) to order your meal and... DOH! you've forgotten to get the number off the table to tell the bar person where you are sitiing. No problem you walk back and forth and retrieve the number to the bar staff who submits your order. The staff are never rude or particularly pleasent just....indifferent.The toilets and eating areas are always very clean and there is alot of space so you do not sit on top of each other which i hate about other restaurants.
So you wait and patiently drink your cosmopolitan ( husband had beer £ 1-70 ) and suck in the cosy ambience for half an hour until that big moment of the food arriving.
Oh dear... This is where it all falls apart The steak in the pie is clearly from a tin and the pastry has been plooped on top... You just know that they didnt come from the same dish! Oh well at least these colourful boiled veg look nice and tasty.......... " Crunch " there goes my filling. Now i know, i know, veg is much healthier when it is raw but call me old fashioned i like it the way my mum and other normal homosapiens make it nice and soft and tasty with a little butter.
The quality of the food really lets this place down, i know a chef from our local wetherspoons and he has leeked to me that alot of stuff is microwaved including veg! Nooooooo it looked so cosy and traditional and healthy. It just can't be.... well let me tell you it is.
Don't get me wrong if you want a cheap drink and a small snack ( i.e. nachos, burger and chips etc) then wetherspoons is the cats pyjama's, But lets not try and kid ourselves into thinking that the chefs here are cooks! i have been here with my little brother several times and i must admit the kids menu is great with lots of options and tiny prices. I have even ordered off it myself once and the mini burger and chips were yummy.
i feel so much better now i have this off my chest and won't be spending my money on the traditional menu here anymore but will instead opt for a nice cold drink and my favourite wetherspoons Nacho's.Nobody can get crisps and cheese wrong....Yum!
Please remember my mothers words of wisdom.....
" You only get what you pay for ".
xx
