I have stayed at Weymouth for the last 3 summers and love the place, it is full of friendly people and there is loads to do. The annual Beach Volleyball Classic is superb and runs for three days over the summer at the beginning of August. I was amazed last year when I got one of the Volleyball programmes to see a picture of myself and brother and sister on the front cover!
This review is all about camping, I will include a few places to visit in and around Weymouth. Here are the sites I have stayed on, I have rated them in terms of my experiences: -
This is a five star site and is popular for families with all the usual Haven facilities. There is an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, Nightclub with entertainment, Amusements, shop, takeaway, laundrette and outdoor play area plus caged football arena. The site is 2 miles outside Weymouth, it takes about 20 minutes to drive into Weymouth at busy times ue to traffic congestion. There is a sea water lagoon next to the site, hence the name Little Sea.
Camping in my 4 man tent cost £15 per night (3 years ago), the camp field was a bit hilly and unless you got a pitch at the foot of the hill it could be a bit uncomfortable unles you had the luxury of air beds ( I did not) There were clean toilets and shower block, the site was not too full. The site fee included passes to all Haven's facilities.
OVERALL VALUE 4/5
OSMINGTON MILLS CAMP SITE
Situated two miles outside Weymouth, at the other side of the town. A large site ideal for camping or mobile caravan / camper van. The site is hilly and there are some flat pitches at the bottom & top of the site. Facilities are good with a new toilet and shower block at the bottom of the site (very posh for campers), there are smaller toilet, sinks half way up the hill. There is a club and it is a short walk away from the camping ground, down a country lane. There is also an outdoor pool and small shop for supplies. However a short drive takes you to one of the numerous supermarkets in Weymouth (Sommerfield, Asda, Tesco)
Camping in my larger 6 man tent cost £15 per night, the atmosphere on site was good with the occasional sing song at night outside the tents.
OVERALL VALUE 4/5
OSMINGTON CORNER CAMPSITE
Situatde close to the Osmington Mills, but on the corner of the lane you drive down to find the other site. The site is very basic with a small block containing showers, toilets and outside sinks. These are primitive compared to the other two sites, but I thought it was back to basics - traditional no frills camping. No club, no pool, just a big field.
The pitches however were good, with terrraces providing flat ground. There are over 100 pitches taking tents, campervans and caravans. The atmosphere was really good and our car developed a fault (starter motor) and a friendly camper sorted us out like we were part of a big camping family.
Cost £10 a night with a reduction to £65 for a full week
OVERALL RATING 1/5 (Facilities) 4/5 (Pitches)
Finally if you venture down Weymouth "Happy Camping!"
