Whirlowbrook Hall is located about 5 miles to the west of Sheffield city centre, close to the county border of Derbyshire and on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It was built in 1906 as the family home of Sir Walter Benton-Jones, a leading industrialist in the city.

Today, Whirlowbrook Hall is one of the premier venues in the region for weddings, conferences, banquets and meetings. Within the building there are numerous different rooms that can be hired out for these private functions. The venue now also holds a civil marriage license so it is possible to get married here in addition to holding your function here afterwards.

The various rooms range dramatically in size. A few years ago I worked for a company that hired out the Music Room on several occasions for its senior staff meetings and this is when I first became acquainted with Whirlowbrook Hall.

The Music Room includes a small theatre and a boardroom and with a capacity of only around 20 people it has a nice intimate feel to it and at that time was perfect for my company's needs. There are wonderful views across the landscaped gardens and when I was here I always felt like I was in a grand country house.

I suppose the description of a grand country house is not too far off the mark. This is of course exactly what Whirlowbrook Hall was a century ago and although it has now been likened to a modern day country hotel without beds I personally feel that it has a much warmer and more private feel to it then any hotel I have ever visited.

Each of the rooms have a different theme and the hall itself stands in the middle of 39 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens with fountains, lakes and fishing ponds. Whirlowbrook Hall is not visible from any public road and access is via a long, narrow windy road.

There is a large car park adjacent to the hall and it is free to park here. There are also a few limited parking spaces in lay-by's along the access road. Entry into the grounds is free and there is a cafe located within the building but to get beyond this point you need to be attending an official engagement. The cafe has a large terrace attached to it, which is at the front of the hall and when the weather is fine this is usually very busy. Be warned however the one and only time I visited this café, which was around 5 years ago, a cup of coffee was around £2 a time.

The café opens daily throughout the summer from 11am until 4.45pm but during the winter it only opens at weekends, and also closes an hour earlier during this period at 3.45pm.

My most recent visit to Whirlowbrook Hall was in December 2007 when I attended my friend's wedding ceremony. She didn't actually get married at the hall but she had her evening do here. There is an area within Whirlowbrook Hall that is specifically set aside for catering for wedding functions and this room can cater for up to 150 people. The setting was perfect and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.

Overall I think that Whirlowbrook Hall is an ideal venue for weddings, conferences, banquets and meetings and I would certainly recommend it to others.
