Whitby (England)

Over the years, I've spent many a glorious family weekend sampling the delights of the traditional fishing port of Whitby, a genuine treasure of the North Yorkshire coastline, tantalisingly within reach of Newcastle, York and Scarborough. It's a town rich in maritime tradition, popular with ... Read review

Walking in a Whitby Wonderland

Advantages: Spectacular setting, great northern seaside tradition
Disadvantages: Tricky to get round in parts, far too easy to stuff your face!

...Dracula, the local gemstone is Whitby Jet ; dark, opulent and magical in every aspect.

==All dressed in black for a day at the seaside==

And believe me, if like us you happen upon Gothic weekend, if you go down to the beach that day you're sure of a big surprise. There's really no better way to keep those unruly little ones in check than the sight of 100's of gothic afficionados roaming through the streets beautifully ...
...slope straight onto those Golden Whitby sands.

For me though, long before you get to any of that, there's an ideal opportunity to first soak up the side-streets that are bristling with cultural quirkiness and then if you are feeling sufficiently energetic, to take the chance to stroll up the multitude of cobbled steps that lead you to the Abbey. So when you come to the little red bridge, take a right turn, and head into the teashop ... more

Wish you were in Whitby, but bring a coat ... !

Advantages: Lovely place, nice atmosphere, not over-run by pests
Disadvantages: journey was difficult, was rather too commercial

Whitby is the quaint, fishing town situated on the North East coast of England. It's full of cobbled streets and sweet fisherman cottages, with streets barely wide enough for a car. Is it a typical seaside slightly tacky fishing town or have I found my perfect seaside destination ... ===JOURNEY TO THE EDGE OF THE COUNTRY === The journey to Whitby was not a long one from my location between Birmingham and Manchester, it was just under 4 hours as ...
...===SCENERY=== Parts of Whitby are wild and full of history; the whales bones in the side of the cliff, the sweet fisherman's cottages behind the ugly modern houses lining the edge of the cliff and river. The quaint cobbled streets and old worn steps, tucked out of site on the Whitby that is a lot harder to find. As most of Whitby, or most of the noticeable parts are covered in commercialisation. Cheap tacky stores, commercial brands, junk food shops ...

Whitby - a place to visit

Advantages: A good sea side historic town
Disadvantages: Not for city lover

Whitby is one of the coastal areas in North Yorkshire. WHATS SPECIAL It has more historical associations. The historical buildings give a good charm to the place. It has a fishing harbour which is a place to relax and boating in summer. Some of the very important places I visited in Whitby were Whitby abbey, old town and West cliff. It's very well known for freshly caught fish. So "Fish and chips "are very special over there. We can get its taste ...
...spend the whole day. WHITBY ABBEY The cliff top ruined Whitby abbey beyond Mary's church is one of the fascinating sight scenes. It is one of the most important evocations of England. On seeing the building we could guess the historical design and splendour. As we enter the monastery, we can see the fourteenth-century nave in the foreground and the earlier, thirteenth-century choir in the background. Whitby Abbey was founded in the seventh century ...

May your Duck bring you Luck.

Advantages: Beautiful town...very friendly and pretty. Good Shops and lots to visit, there and in the surrounding area.
Disadvantages: I had to come home! Things shut down at the end of October.

...~~~Where is Whitby? Whitby is located in the North East of England, not far from the North Yorkshire Moors. You will find this extremely pretty fishing village at the mouth of the River Esk. Whitby’s skyline is dominated by the Gothic Abbey on the Cliff top ~ we were there at the end of Gothic week and also saw the lovely firework display that made the Abbey look even more spectacular! When you see the Abbey silhouetted against the night sky you ...
...the Wolds Coast line. Whitby is a popular place to visit for the day when you are staying at Scarborough, Bridlington or Filey…we visited many times when I was little, but this was my first chance to actually stay here. ~~~Where did we stay? We stayed in a lovely basement flat not far from the Crescent and the West Cliff area of Whitby, on the West side of the river. We had to walk down to the harbour (and it was quite a steep climb on the way ...

The Man with the Camera....

Advantages: Heaps to see and do, spectacular views, good beaches
Disadvantages: The man with the camera...:O)

...could possibly desire. Whitby during August Bank Holiday weekend is a little different however. All of the above still applies, with the addition of a short blonde woman, a slightly taller brunette one and small nine-year-old boy doing their damndest to avoid the man with the camera! The man with the camera gets everywhere, ready to snap at you when you’re at your most windswept, pulling the daftest of faces or generally just looking like you’ve ...
...all over again! :O) Whitby is steeped in history and you’ll never be short of things to see or do. On our first full day we decided the best way to view the town was on top of one of the many open-topped tour buses, with the wind streaming through our hair and full commentary throughout from a tour guide. And of course, the man with the camera! ;O) The tour takes approximately an hour, but your ticket covers you for the entire day so you can ...

BOATS....SHEEP....AND CANDYFLOSS TOO..

Advantages: lovely If Weather Permitting
Disadvantages: Horrible in winter

Being a resident of Whitby Town, it’s not very often I get to experience it from the tourists point of view, however having Louise. (Or Squiggles as you know her on here), stopping for a few days it was the perfect opportunity to play at tourist myself!. Whitby is situated in The North of England and is a coastal resort, lovely in summer, but cold and bleak in winter, it is very picturesque in parts, so what exactly did we find to do and see ...

It's a huge whale bone arch

Advantages: An intersting attraction, free to visit
Disadvantages: In a remote location

of Lewis. If you are approaching as I did from the west or south then it is on the on the left, obviously if you approach from the north or the east then it will be on your right. There is no denying that the sheer size of this whale bone makes for a magnificent sight. It is much bigger than the other Whale Bone Arch that I am familiar with in Whitby, in North East England so I certainly figured that it was worthy of a photograph. As I took my camera out of my bag a woman appeared from the house (to my slight embarrassment) and asked me if I wanted a closer look. She explained that they get quite a few visitors, including the odd coach party and she is always happy for them to have a look. The lady had a wealth of information about the whale bone, telling me that it was her grandfather that had found the dead whale on the beach in ...

The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Whitby

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

Whitby in north east England is today a bustling little town that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Many come here because of its quaint narrow streets and it's old-worldly charms, others to see its old traditional working harbour. There is no denying that Whitby is a town that is steeped in a rich history and at the centre of this history is the story of Captain James Cook. Reference to this local hero, who sailed from here on his epic voyages of discovery to the New World, are everywhere that you look. In fact the residents of this town are so proud of their connections that they have dedicated an entire museum to him, which is known as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. This museum is located on one of these narrow streets that so typify the old part of the town. The building itself that houses this museum ...

Whitby is Delightful

Advantages: Beautiful. Quaint. Historical. Links to Dracula,
Disadvantages: Hard to think of any

When I lived in Yorkshire-itself a gorgeous county for those prepared to seek out its many charms-one of my most popular excursions was to take my wife and young daughter to Whitby. What a delightful little town Whitby is. As you approach it from the moors the first dramatic sight is that of the 11 th century Whitby Abbey, sacked during the days of King Henry VIII th. Now this building is under the auspices of English Heritage and to get to it from the town, you have to climb no less than 199 steps. Entrance is one pound, seventy pence. Whitby is forever assciated with Count Dracula. The author, Bram Stoker, lived in the town. This lovely little town also has a monument to Captain James Cook-this Yorkshireman was a wonderful sailor, who charted the oceans, pioneered developments in Australia, and insisted on his sailors taking lime to ...
