What can I say. The In Laws have a Luxury Mobile Holiday Home (static caravan) about 1.5 miles South of the Abbey in Whitby.
My wife and Kids have just come back from 5 weeks there and I have just have 2 fantstic 9but wet) weeks.
I tend to take my annual holidays spanning the Regatta weekend (next year 6,7 and 8 August 2005) .
The highlight of the regatta weekend is the fun fair market and firework display on the Monday.
Over the three days thare are various activities on the West Cliff ranging from the Army Death Slide to Bouncy Castles and Punch and Judy shows. Oh and the rowing races !
Sunday night people gather in the town to watch the fair come down "Khyber Pass". I am always amazed to see the fairgroung rides and articulate lorrries make their way down this narrow road with a very sharp bend at the bottom. The fair is then set up on the pier/houbour wall. It is amazing to see the whole fair set up and ready the next morning and all packed away by Tuesday morning.
Monday brings the fancy dress floats and childrens fancy dress parade. The number of floats seems to decrease each year. Then doewn to the fair.
About 9.45pm the regatta fireworks display is set off (tip if the fireworks are being set off from the East Pier, the Abbey is a good vantage point).
Once the Regatta is over, Whitby gets back to its usual self a small fishing port with a good tourist trade. The town is plit into two by the river Esk. Ths new town on the West side and the Old town on the East side. This includes the Market Square and a number of gift shops etc.
Whitby has a sandy beach on the west side at the bottom of the cliff which extends for a couple of miles to the next village Sandsend. If you are lucky, you will find fossils on the beach.
There is also a small beach on the East side in the Harbour area.
A couple of miles inland from Whitby is the village of Goathland (Aidensfield in Heartbeat). This a quaint village with sheep wandering on the greens.
There are numerous walks in an around Whitby. The Cleveland Way passes through and also to the south, the old railway line has been made into a cycle and bridal way to Robin Hood Ba and beyond.

Review of Whitby (England)
Advantages: Beautiful town...very friendly and pretty. Good Shops and lots to visit, there and in the surrounding area. Disadvantages: I had to come home! Things shut down at the end of October.
