WHATS SPECIAL It has more historical associations. The historical buildings give a good charm to the place. It has a fishing harbour which is a place to relax and boating in summer. Some of the very important places I visited in Whitby were Whitby abbey, old town and West cliff.
It's very well known for freshly caught fish. So "Fish and chips "are very special over there. We can get its taste elsewhere.
Once we thought of having a day trip to nearby village and since it was summer we planned to go towards the seashore to relax. But I didn't want the seashore to be crowded. I wanted to have a less crowded area and I preferred to see a historical village. My hubby said the best bet would be "Whitby". So started our trip early in the morning so that we could spend
the whole day.
WHITBY ABBEY The cliff top ruined Whitby abbey beyond Mary's church is one of the fascinating sight scenes. It is one of the most important evocations of England. On seeing the building we could guess the historical design and splendour.
As we enter the monastery, we can see the fourteenth-century nave in the foreground and the earlier, thirteenth-century choir in the background.
Whitby Abbey was founded in the seventh century on cliffs by the sea; its haunting remains can still be seen from the sea and are a testament to the Golden Age of Northumbria. People with interests in history and historical heritages will certainly love this place. It would be a treat for them.
Open timings April - September 10am -6pm October 10am - 5pm November - March 10 am -3pm
£3.80 entrance fee per person.
ST MARYS CHURCH Through the old streets leads up to the parish Church of St Mary, one of the finest Anglo Saxon churches in the country, featuring carved pews made by ship's carpenters and craftsmen from Whitby's once booming whaling fleet. Its churchyard is famous for providing the setting which inspired Bram Stoker to write his classic novel - Dracula.
OLD TOWN When talking about Whitby and its fame, it's a must to mention about Old town. Hemmed with steep cliffs and divided with river Esk, the town splits into two haves. Both the parts are joined by a swing bridge. It's a fantastic experience to walk through the swing bridge. The old town is towards the east. The streets have the eighteenth and nineteenth century character. While passing through them, we feel as if we went to the past by time machine.
WEST CLIFF The newer town is called as West Cliff which the home of quayside. The railway was brought to Whitby by George Hudson only nineteenth century. Only after that Whitby became famous town and a holiday resort. Wide streets, elegant crescents, boarding houses and hotels are laid on west cliff across the harbour of the old town. There is a small harbour front which fish markets and loads of shops and fish and chips shops.
WHITBY LIFEBOAT MUSEUM It is situated in pier road and its one of the best museums of the country. It has the gold metals won by various crew members, and more fascinating crafts of the hand made boats of the previous centuries. On seeing them we could get a good amount of knowledge about the historic heritages. It's really amazing to see them. Inside the Whitby Museum discover the life story of the town's most famous inhabitant, Captain James Cook, who sailed from the port to change the history of the world. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, his former home in Grape Lane, is furnished in the style of his times, when Whitby was the seventh-largest port in England
It is open at irregular hours, so we have to check. Donation is also requested during the visit.
FOOD AND DRINK As we know Whitby is famous for freshly caught fish. Its famous for its delicious, mouth watering Fish and Chips. You could get Fish, chips, tea and bread for £4.
ENTERTAINMENT AND FESTIVALS Whitby Folk week - It is celebrated in August (the week after the bank holiday). During the week all the pubs, restaurants and streets are filled with singers, band troops and traditional dancers all through the day and night. This year it would be 20 - 26 of August.
I heard the Goths would arrive two times a year for good natured vampiric vacation. Usually it would in April of every year
We visited most of the places, had good food. Then at last we went to the shore on other side which had caravan parking as well. On the way we found a shop selling dressed crabs. We purchased a couple and had good dinner to night as well. Whitby is one of the places which I would remember for my life.

Whitby is lovely. I went for the first time a couple of months ago. We took a boat trip out along the front. They do deep sea fishing trips from the harbour which wa plan to go back and do sometime, sadly the Summer is flying by all too quickly.... x

Advantages: Beautiful town...very friendly and pretty. Good Shops and lots to visit, there and in the surrounding area. Disadvantages: I had to come home! Things shut down at the end of October.
