For the past year, my best friend has been living and working in Athens, giving me the perfect excuse to visit the city twice in the past 6 months. I've been really enamoured with the city, which can be seen from some of my previous reviews, and have really enjoyed the Greek cuisine. However, there is only so much souvlaki and mousaka that even the greatest fan can take ... ...have something a bit different.
Many of the non-Greek restaurants in the city centre often appeared to be quite expensive but we were lucky enough to find this restaurant, off the beaten track in the district of Kalithea, within walking distance of my friend’s apartment. For the past year, my best friend has been living and working in Athens, giving me the perfect excuse to visit the city twice in the past 6 months. I've been really enamoured with the city, which can be seen from some of my previous reviews, and have really enjoyed the Greek cuisine. However, there is only so much souvlaki and mousaka that even the greatest fan can take and sometimes it is nice to have a break and have something a bit different.
Many of the non-Greek restaurants in the city centre often appeared to be quite expensive but we were lucky enough to find this restaurant, off the beaten track in the district of Kalithea, within walking distance of my friend’s apartment. For many Athens visitors then this will be too far out but if you want a good value, nice meal, whilst exploring the Athens known to locals then it may be on your 'hitlist'.
The restaurant is an eclectic mix of styles with the interiors reminding me of a German bierhaus during Oktoberfest, clashed with the Frankie & Benny's chain in the UK when looking at the menu. By this, I mean that there is a good range of pizza and pasta dishes alongside some slightly more traditional foods and also basics such as jacket potatoes. The bierhaus atmosphere is emphasised by the fact that they serve a really nice German beer, which, whilst the Greek beers aren't that bad, was a refreshing change. On both occasions that I visited, I enjoyed a really nice meat feast pizza that had on it many meat sausages (not a double-entendre!) and it was delicious but also huge. If you are unable to finish, they will also provide a small box for you to take it home (my friend, not me I would like to add!)
The staff in the restaurant were really friendly although, unlike many central restaurants, the level of English isn't as high. Luckily, my friend speaks very good Greek but I did find it amusing that often the staff would talk at you in Greek, despite the fact that it was obvious you didn't speak a word of the language. They were also really helpful when it came to my girlfriends coeliacs disease (she can't eat gluten), helping us make informed decisions on what she could and couldn't eat.
If you do decide to visit the restaurant then there are 3 ways to get there. The first is to get a taxi but as anyone who has travelled in Athens, this is a little more expensive (and possibly scary!). The second is to go by train. Up until they finish at about midnight, you can grab a train on the green metro line and get off at Tavros station. From here, it's about a 15min walk down the main road that is ahead of you when you exit the station. Finally, you can catch a bus (sorry can't remember number) from just down the road which will take you back to Syntagma Square. I have put a google maps link at the bottom to a map I have created.
This restaurant is one of the nicest eateries that I visited during the two periods of time that I have spent in the city this year but for most people, it is going to be too far off the beaten track for enjoyment. However, if you want to explore further afield or for some reason are in Kalithea, definitely visit this restaurant.
