Winchester in Hampshire was reputedly the richest place in England during the 1980's and it most decidely gives the appearance of a well-maintained and affluent city. Its major attraction is the world famous Winchester Cathedral which has been a place of worship and prayer for more than 900 years.
This beautiful building houses the tombs of Saint Swithun, Izaak Walton and that brilliant novelist Jane Austen who spent the last few weeks of her life in College Street in Winchester. Jane Austen has close links with this attractive part of Hampshire.
Tours can be made of the Cathedral and you can see the unique collection of Chantry Chapels and listen to the fascinating story of how the diver William Walker saved the Cathedral in 1906. A visit to the Crypt is interesting to see the Sound II sculpture whilst the Triforium Gallery houses some great treasures such as the original statuary from the Great Screen,Bishop Morley's Library and the priceless Winchester Bible.
If you are feeling energetic you can climb the steps up the Tower and get a great view above the city, which was once the capital of Wessex and of England. The Deanery, the official residence of the Dean of Winchester is highly attractive and the Close is a beautiful and very tranquil area;particularly noteworthy are the 14 th century Pilgrim's Hall and the picturesque Cheyney Court.
The Visitor Centre, which was opened in 1993,houses the Cathedral Shop and the Cathedral Refectory;in the former visitors can buy a wide range of gift items and mementoes. There is,for example,Wedgwood and Portmerion china, guide books, postcards, films, CD's and stamps that can be bought. In the Refectory you can enjoy morning coffee, lunch or even delectable cream teas.
Besides the Cathedral there is Winchester Castle and hanging in the Great Hall,is what some believe was King Arthur's legendary Round Table, although others believe it a myth. After looking at the Castle there is Winchester College to go and see, it is the oldest public school in England.
Winchester makes a nice day visit and if you want to do the place full justice and also see the attractive countryside then a two or three day visit is recommended.
