Winchester Cathedral

Advantages: Nice architecture Tranquil Clean and pleasant environment
Disadvantages: Parking can be a problem

Winchester in Hampshire was reputedly the richest place in England during the 1980's and it most decidely conveys to the visitor the appearance of a well-maintained and affluent city. Its major attraction is undoubtedly the world famous Winchester Cathedral which has been a place of worship and prayer for more than 900 years. This beautiful building houses the tombs of Saint Swithun, Izaak Walton and that brilliant novelist Jane Austen who spent the last few weeks of her life in College Street in Winchester.Tours can be made of the Cathedral and you can see the unique collection of Chantry Chapels and listen to the story of how the diver William Walker saved the Cathedral in 1906. A visit to the Crypt is interesting to see the Sound II sculpture whilst the Triforium Gallery houses some great treasures such as the original ...

Review of Winchester (England)

Fish locked up in Winchester...

Advantages: Stylish, lively, good variety of quality seafood
Disadvantages: No good if you hate fish!

Loch Fyne is a small chain of seafood restaurants, located in unusual and historic buildings around the country. They specialise in high quality fresh and smoked fish and shellfish, all from sustainable sources. (They have removed swordfish, skate and monkfish from the menu due to their 'at risk' status.) The location in Winchester is particularly interesting, a 16th century jailhouse, one of the oldest buildings in Winchester. They have kept most of the original features, including galleries and beamed ceilings, and used lots of natural wood in the floors, panelling and furniture. The addition of art, photography and various marine items completes the stylish, 'medieval bistro' (!) look. There is also a courtyard area which is usually full during the summer months. The atmosphere is usually pretty lively, so it isn't the place ...
