Dried Llama Foetus, Anyone???

Advantages: A unqiue experience of Andean culture
Disadvantages: Very much on the tourist trail

...daily Mercado de Hechicería - Witches' Market - in the centre of La Paz.

The 'witches' were so called by the Spanish Conquistadors for their traditional non-Catholic practices, such as fortune telling, and their knowledge of the uses of local plants. Their small stalls are jam packed with objects, such as bundles of brightly coloured sweets and coca leaves, to be used as offerings, herbal remedies, talismans and magic charms. Some ...

The Witches' Market is located in Calle Linares, an old cobbled colonial-style street, in the centre of the city, behind San Francisco Church. The easiest way to reach the market is on foot, and the streets of La Paz are relatively pedestrian friendly and well sign-posted. However, it is a hilly place, and at such high altitude (at 3,500m, La Paz is the highest city in the world) physical exertion can take its toll, with many ... more

moon walking, political demonstrations and women in bowler hats

Advantages: unique capital city, cheap, friendly people
Disadvantages: high altitide can cause problems

this was wonderful service. MOON VALLEY: The next day we had a tour of the Moon valley which is a park in a valley within the city of La Paz which is strangely eroded because it is clay rock. It gets its name as the eroded rocks look a bit like the surface of the moon or so they say. They have carved steps and made a circular path through the area so that you get a really good look at all the rock formations. They also have an odd looking rabbit with a long tail a bit like a squirrel?s tail. We were lucky enough to see one perched on a rock but it didn?t run off so we were not able to see the long tail. I wanted to clap my hands so that it might hop off but I wasn?t allowed to by my husband. It was rather like a wild rabbit, sort of brownish in colour but larger than British wild rabbits. THE WITCHES' MARKET: After the Moon valley we ...

Bolvia is one great place!

Advantages: The whole country is breath taking
Disadvantages: Not being able to bargin!

- Salt flats, a hotel made of salt, beautiful lakes, beautiful scenery Flamingos, other wild life, thunder storms, old indigenous sites that have been abandoned (the guide will tell you storeys as to why) Deep Canyons, Lamas (Dont go near them they will spit in your face) Hot springs Accommodations - You'll be staying in a high altitude village which probably wont have electricity, its a real good experience Annoyances - The jeeps are not always up to MOT standard and you will experience a few flat tires and broken down engines on the way, but never fear, help is always round the corner! Its all part of the adventure. To take: Warm clothing 2. La Paz is breath taking, a city surrounded by mountains, you can go shopping in the witches market which sells anything from woolly hats to lama foetuses! Take a tour of La Paz's open prison ...

Eating llama in a volcano

Advantages: Amazing sights, very cheap, unique city, great shopping
Disadvantages: Altitude sickness, hard to get around

is excellent. We stayed in the Hotel Andes which gave us a full american breakfast each morning and a laundry service for a few dollars, but any guide book (or taxi driver for that matter) will point you in the direction of numerous such hotels. PLACES TO EAT As with any major city there are huge numbers of restaurants in most areas, and it is generally a case of exploring. There are no real 'restaurant districts' as such, though you find a fair concentration around tourist areas such as the Witches' Market. My favourite restaurant (possibly in the world) is a place called the Inca Palace, right above the main Western Union Bank in the centre of La Paz. They serve excellent pasta dishes, but their speciality is red meat. Two favourites were the fillet steak, served on a stone plate fired in a kiln so that the steak keeps cooking ...
