Serenity In A City

Advantages: Cheap, beautiful location
Disadvantages: Disabled access, could do with better facilities

...of Nottingham city centre is Wollaton Hall. Standing proud and overlooking 500 acres of parkland, it provides a welcome retreat in an otherwise busy environment.

The stately home was built in the 1580s for the Willoughby family and its light exterior gives the hall a welcoming atmosphere despite its age. It is no longer preserved as a Tudor house but instead has been transformed into Nottingham's Natural Museum and each of the rooms ...
...already stuffed, in 1878 and Wollaton Hall has been his home for many years. Let's just say that George hangs there in all his glory! On the ground floor you should also look out for a delicate matchstick model of the Hall. Completed in 1984, it consists of 49,149 matchsticks and took 3½ years of painstaking effort.

There are two wide staircases up to the first floor and each is surrounded by more natural history displays. One of ... more

Butterly Park - Brewsters Fayre/Whitbread The Butterley Park pub/ restaurant has fast become my most favourite place to eat. It is a fairly large pub, very spacious and caters for all ages. Situated on the outskirts of Ripley, opposite the police headquarters and Mcdonalds, that is a bit of a pain as James always seems to wants a ‘happy meal’, whenever we go! Facilities There is a lovely friendly atmosphere here in the pub, even though ...
...is the ‘smokers corner’ which houses four tables for four people, this is my second most favourite part of the pub as you have to go up four steps and can see all around the rest of the pub, nosy sod that I am! It also houses a lovely little bay window through which you look out onto open fields, not to mention the lorries thundering past, something James finds great! Surrounding this little platform, are a 6 tables where you can sit ...

500 acres of natural parkland.

Advantages: Variety of attractions.
Disadvantages: Needs a good tea room.

...the Nottingham City Council bought Wollaton Hall and its grounds and since that time it has become one of the most popular attractions in the county. Wollaton Hall was completed in 1588 after taking eight years to be built, under the instructions of Robert Smythson. The hall cost £8,000 to build, which is equivalent to around £15million today. The building is a wonderful example of Elizabethan Stone and is built in an almost totally symmetrical design. ...
...mature parkland and formal gardens. Wollaton Hall is famous for its herd of red and fallow deer that wander freely throughout the grounds. It is not unusual to see the deer grazing just a few yards from you as you walk through the park. This is not the only wildlife that you will see. Rabbits and squirrels are abundant in the park and in the quieter areas you may be able to tempt the squirrels to take food from you. The park has a lake and you can ...

A favourite for locals

Advantages: Tranquil green area in the middle of a busy city
Disadvantages: *****

...lot worse than to visit Wollaton Hall. The City of Nottingham owns the hall and grounds and it is open for all to see. The hall is set in extensive grounds with a lake, golf course and plenty of grassland. There is a children’s play area and in the summer evenings you can watch hot air balloons taking off. At the back of the hall are some formal gardens, which are pleasant to walk around and are a nice place for a picnic. Wandering around ...

Hall of Fame

Advantages: Beautiful scenery and a piece of history
Disadvantages: Often a bit crowded

...chewing-gum and litter. Wollaton Hall is the antidote...just when you are losing faith in the tourist attractions over here, you should visit this place. The hall itself is a large, english renaissance building; cool, airy and a pleasure to walk around even when it is raining outside. In it, there is a motor museum and the city's only natural history museum. The park around wollaton is the main attraction, but should you be unlucky enough to chance ...
...reason that most people go. Wollaton Hall is set in an impressive 500 acres of greenery with a beautiful and inspiring deer park. Nowadays you can still see the deer in amongst the trees, but what stands out more are the dozens of picnickers. Wollaton Park - Amazing retreat from the city!

Advantages: Quiet, beautiful scenery, free entry, deer
Disadvantages: -

Wollaton Park comprises of over 500 acres, all set just minutes from Nottingham city centre - a complete surprise! The Grade 1 listed building, Wollaton Hall, set in the park, was completed in 1588. Now, visitors are welcome to visit the hall and park, and many do so each year. On entering the park, it is difficult to imagine that it is located right in the middle of such a busy, bustling city. It is a peaceful oasis, where you can stroll around ...

Nottingham

Advantages: Vibrant Nightlife, Music Scene
Disadvantages: Lack of Green Space

music (Athlete played this year), and various other spectacles. Nottingham has a vibrant nightlife, countless bars and a great deal of clubs. The more up-market and trendy bars are in the 'lacemarket' area of the city. Having two large Universities - Nottingham Trent and Nottingham Uni, there are a great deal of students out on week day nights. The music scene in the city is good and growing. Nottingham has some excellent venues in Nottingham Arena (also an iceskating rink), Rock City, The Bodega Social Club, Stealth and Rescue Rooms. It could be argued that the city lacks green space, however its fairly small and the countryside (places like Sherwood Forest!) is never too far away. Wollaton Park and Wollaton Hall near the Uni is a fairly large park which hosts an annual music festival. Transport in Nottingham is good. In ...

Nottingham - Doesnt deserve the bad rep

Advantages: Good Size, Reasonable Prices, Nice People
Disadvantages: Quite busy, lots of drunken people

cinema and a posh gym. These bar/restaurants include Bella Italia, Santa Fe, Sausage, Saltawater, all of which are worth a visit. Transport-wise, we have just got a new tram service which is good value for money and very reliable. but it can get busy at peak times and doesnt run along many routes. The bus service is also pretty good but rather expensive- it costs around £1 for a single fare or £2.20 for a day ticket. For those of you with cars, there are several car parks in the city centre, but they tend to fill up pretty quickly so i would recommend using the park and ride service at the forest recreation ground. There are lots of places to visit - Nottingham Castle is beautiful in the summer and a perfect place for picnics, as is wollaton park. The tales of robin hood and gallaries of justice are also popular. Of course, every city ...
