This huge Chinese restaurant on Wardour Street has a cult following in London. Although as a chef I normally won’t go near a place that serves indifferent food, for this place occasionally I will make an exception, if I am drunk or up for a laugh. So I will add my Wong Kei story to the others, I think everyone who goes there must have one.
I have been chatting on the Net for a few years now. When a lady that I chat to regularly in Bianca’s Smut Shack said that she was coming to the UK, some of the UK chatters agreed to meet up with her. None of us had met all the others previously. As a couple of us are Londoners we decided that Wong Kei was the place to go to break the ice.
As usual we were told by a surly waiter to join the queue of people snaking up the stairs, before grudgingly being given a table. We ordered the set meal, and settled down to our nosh, one of our party struggling because he was not allowed a knife and fork as is the norm. Within minutes, we were interrupted by a waiter, saying “Two Chicken? One chicken allowed.” He then snatched the offending extra platter of chicken and bore it off. We cracked up. I think we were charged £7 a head for the meal, but it sure served its purpose in relaxing us.
I have also been in this restaurant for lunch, when it was nearly empty. The food was quite good and very plentiful, and the service very polite. To be fair I have never had a meal in this place that was inedible, and I would say that it is better than many competitors in the area. Perhaps it is the pressure in the evening that makes the service go downhill, but I don’t think so. More likely they know we all love it and we will come back for more!
