At dinner on the first evening, it took ages to get served. The meal consisted of loads of small courses, but they were really odd combinations of foods. My mother had ordered ... ...of meat in a nondescript sauce. Although we'd booked for 7.30, with the slow service, it was really late by the time we ordered our puddings and all the nice things had gone already. We were quite surprised - the dining room hadn't been particularly full.

I'd wanted to stay in this hotel for years and was really disappointed when I actually did! My sister and I, our boyfriends and our parents spent a long weekend at the Wordsworth. It cost an arm and a leg as we booked half board. We really regretted that decision. At dinner on the first evening, it took ages to get served. The meal consisted of loads of small courses, but they were really odd combinations of foods. My mother had ordered steak - she actually got three ten pence sized pieces of meat in a nondescript sauce. Although we'd booked for 7.30, with the slow service, it was really late by the time we ordered our puddings and all the nice things had gone already. We were quite surprised - the dining room hadn't been particularly full. Walking around Grasmere next day, we saw a lovely bistro where the food was much more to our liking and the prices were about half of those at the Wordsworth. Add to this the grubby rooms with blood stained wallpaper, the pool with the stone cold jacuzzi, staff on reception who barely spoke English, a gym with equipment that didn't function and a general feeling that the whole place was in need of some TLC. The weekend was a waste of money and we left severely disappointed. We did complain at the time, and have written to the hotel since. They haven't even had the common courtesy to reply. It's been over two months now. My mother has phoned several times but the manager has not been willing/able to speak to her on any occasion and has not returned her calls either. We can't really believe that this hotel have earned the 4 stars that they display on their boards nor that they have the audacity to charge the prices they do.
