OK, so I cheated with the title. The World Trade Center (sic - sorry I made a British typo when I asked Melanie to add this one) isn't wild but it is wide, and long, and ... quite high too.
At the top of Ploenchit Road, it's just out of the Sukhumvit area and is very easy to get to. The Sky Train is the easiest way, or you could get a bus, or even walk. If you're on drugs or it's your first time out of western Europe, you might consider taking a tuk-tuk. (More on Bangkok transport to come in another opinion.)
Once you've got there, the first feeling is of being overwhelmed with the vastness of this shopping mall. However, when you scratch below the surface, I suspect that you'll find much less of interest here than your initial expectation.
There are two excellent department stores here: Zen at one end and Isetan (spelling?) at the other. Both are pretty much like department stores in the UK, except that they often have much more attractive prices. It depends on how the Baht (Thai currency) is doing really. There are some things that are made in Thailand and are always good value though - crockery, glassware, towels and local crafts etc. Toys can also be very good value compared to British prices.
Between these two large havens of retail therapy, there are several floors of other shops. At first it seems very exciting, but once you get used to the place, you'll find that window shopping in yet another Thai silk shop loses its appeal. There are good shops here selling CDs, and the kind of stuff that's good to take home as pressies, but there is very little substance to much of it.
This shopping centre is much more useful for those who live in Thailand. There are plenty of furniture shops, ranging from contemporary to the more traditional Thai style. And there are horrendously expensive jewellers. But what's there for the visitor?
Er, you could buy some Thai silk, some CDs, or some nick nacks to take home. There are chemists if you need some medication - but they're all over the place anyway. Other than the two department stores, I find very little reason to go here.
There is a large food court, plus there are restaurants and coffee shops dotted about, but again, you don't need to search for food in Bangkok.
To sum up, yes, it's worth a visit, but size isn't everything. Never mind the width, feel the quality.
Advantages: Has everything Disadvantages: Easy to miss some of the best shops.
Do they have a map or can you rent a GPS Navigation system for this place – I thought. The place is huge. Really has anything and everything. I must have spent around 4 hours wondering around, eating and drinking. Mainly just window-shopping and dreaming of winning the lottery. The things you could buy here!
There are some really nice restaurants, bars and cafés dotted around the place serving all tastes. Just think of any type of meal, coffee ... ...the top brands are to be found along with the more mainstream brands.
If you’re after computer stuff though, it’s not the place to go. You are much better off going to the Pantip Plaza.
Like everything in Bangkok, which is impossible to find. I would recommend getting there by TUK-TUK (not for the feint hearted). ...
