People do visit Worthing on holidays, and I always wonder why they don't spend a bit more money and stay in Brighton, which is much better and only 15 miles down the road.
Shopping is awful, and unless you intend to buy very basic things, I always find there are never the things I am after, and that I need to go over to Brighton. There is no diversity.
The nightlife is your run-of-the-mill pub chains and commercial clubs. The liquid lounge occasionaly has music acts there, and a couple of places have band nights, though it is all very localised.
The beach is covered in pebbles and is not particularly nice, it also suffers from collecting large amounts of seaweed several times of years.
There is a theartre and a moth-eaten cinema housed in a listed building called The Dome. There are the bolwing greens and several sports complexes in an around Worthing. There are also lots of guest houses in East Worthing by the sea, and some in Central Worthing.
From growing up here, I feel there has been very little provision for young people, and I spent most of my youth bored witless. The council do seem to be waking-up to this, and there is now at least a good skate park in Homefield Park that is always busy. It is a shame that many of Worthings residents are opposed to initiatives such as this, the cycle lane along the promanade is a typical example.
One thing that is nice though, is that Worthing is very close to the Sussex Downs. Cissbury Ring - a four thousand year old hillfort is only a couple of miles from Charmandean Lane in Broadwater, and there is a carpark there accessible from Findon. St Mary's Church, Sompting, which it includes additions from every invading conquest since the Romans, though its main attraction is it's 'Rheinsh Helm' a Saxon roof on the tower that is the only reamining one in the country.
Walking to Cissbury from Sompting Church is a nice walk, and there are a couple of dew ponds that are great for wildlife around spring time. I have seen foxes, badgers and glow worms if you stay up late enough.
If your going to the beach then its worth traveling up towards ferring, as the beaches are a little nicer. Goring Gap is popular because it has parking and a green that is good for barbeques, frisby etc.
If your in town and hungry, I would recommend Mariellios in the Worthing arcade off Ann Street. They do some very cheap but tasty Italian food. I have eaten out at the River Quai which cooks great Thai food, as does Spices (i am told). There are lots of Indian takeaways and resturants, and The China Palace was good place to eat Chineese food when I went there, although a little more money.
There is interesting local history here too.
Worthing suffers from the fact it was predominantly a place to retire, but has become increasing younger. The local council has always tended to favour the opinions of the older residents, but the influx of younger people has meant it is at pains to please both sides. It will be interesting to see if the proposed 'skyscraper' is built on the old Teville Gate site, which was so ugly and desolate that it had to be knocked down!
There are things to do for children also

Hi, interesting to read a review from someone who gre up there - i almost thought that no-one grew up there and pensioners just moved to worthing because it is near the coast. My family have a beach-hut there and we refer to Worthing as Costa Geriatrica.

Advantages: wonderful countryside almost in town; castle; compact centre Disadvantages: disappointing architecture; shopping not great; not so easy to get to by public transport
