"Design" Hotel Greulich, Zurich

Advantages: Style, Rooms, Staff
Disadvantages: Not in the nicest part of town

The Hotel: Hotel Greulich is a "Design Hotel" located close to the centre of Zurich (Switzerland) and is named after Herman Greulich, a Polish social reformer who emigrated to Switzerland and founded the first Socialist Party of Switzerland (the hotel is situated on the corner of Herman-Greulich Strasse). On arrival, my wife and I were a bit disappointed with the building from the outside. Although it was a unusual and cool exterior design, it looked like it needed sprucing up a bit. The windows on the 1st floor and above looked quite old, etc. but at ground floor level, it did look "Design", with a modern looking bar and restaurant. After parking in the secure car park behind the hotel (20 Swiss Francs (CHF) per day), we checked in at reception and were taken to our room. The room was in a small interior courtyard ...

Peace and quiet in central Zurich

Advantages: Location, breakfast, comfort, cleanliness
Disadvantages: Small; a little pricey

's main railway station to the hotel. The best route is to head south along the Bahnhofstrasse, cross the River Limmat, and head towards the Grossmunster (cathedral) whose twin towers cannot be missed. Helmhaus hotel is a few yards south of the Grossmunster in a quiet street that runs parallel to the river. The hotel reception is a small area where there are two armchairs and a coffee table with a bowl of sweets. The desk is manned twenty-four hours a day. I followed my son and his partner into the hotel, as they had already been there two nights and just needed to ask for their key. None of us speaks more than a few words of German, but almost everyone in Zurich speaks English. I greeted the lady at reception, stating my name and the fact that I had a reservation for that evening. Perhaps she didn't understand me, but her reply was that ...

The Best Western Hotel Montana, a great base in Zurich

Advantages: Bacon and eggs on the breakfast buffet, English spoken.
Disadvantages: Expensive, but it is in Zurich!

Best Western Montana, Zurich is very close to the main Zurich railway station which was our reason for choosing this hotel. We paid £323 for three nights bed and breakfast in a double room. For Zurich this did not seem to be bad value for money. The hotel has a restaurant serving evening meals but we did not try them as they seemed a bit pricey for what we wanted, and we found good food available elsewhere, notably at the station. On arrival our reservation was easily found, we had booked through Alpharooms. The receptionist changed to English as soon as we spoke to her and there was no language problem at all. The lift up to our room was glass and we could see right through the hotel, this was a stylish feature which I rather liked. The lift was very smooth. Our room was a reasonable size with a shower room ensuite. The view from ...
