As a traveler looking to save some dough, the Chiangmai YMCA worked out great for me. At 500 baht a night (for a single, I believe 600 for a two person double) the room was very basic, but offered a very good selection of television channels, a curtained shower, a comfortable bed and air conditioning...all luxuries I have not received at that price anywhere else in Thailand.
The location is also convenient, as it is located at about a 5 minute walk from Central Mall where you can purchase anything you might have left at home and pick up a tuc tuc to go anywhere in the city. Breakfast is not complimentary but the restaurant is very cheap and the food is actually quite good. Furthermore, the staff is friendly and helpful and the pool is clean and refreshing.
For nightlife there are a few karaoke bars located nearby, and a club and a karaoke center located just across the street from Central Mall. Also, it is only a short tuc tuc ride (about 30 baht for foreigners) to Chiangmai University where there are some more nightlife options. Overall, I was very pleased with my stay at the Chiangmai YMCA Hotel.
