Relaxing spot at Perth's Government House

Advantages: Beautifully set out, lavish garden displays and an elegant old building
Disadvantages: A pity Government House itself is not open more often for tours.

I recently had a few days in Perth (September 2008) and had the opportunity to look at Government House, located in the city centre. My first view of this stately building (built 1863) was from behind the tall railings that surround the elegant structure, set in lavish gardens. . Through the fence, I could see mysterious Gothic archways, imposing towers, official flags and I must admit, it inspired a closer look. But when I started making inquiries, it appeared that the building itself was only open for guided tours about three or four times a year. So if you are visiting Perth, you would indeed be lucky to coincide with one of these dates, which are advertised in the press. Nevertheless, I began walking around the fenced perimeter of the house and gardens, wondering if it was possible to at least get into to see ...

A jewel in the English crown..... Chatsworth House

Advantages: History so well preserved, grand, homely
Disadvantages: None at all

Experience the living history of rural England, all in the expansive, historic estate of Chatsworth House, where conservation prevails, inside and out. Over 400 years of history has proved Chatsworth House, in England's Peak District, has served its family, its environs and the 650,000 annual visitors to perfection. Dominant in its stunningly rural valley, Chatsworth House is so palacial but has all the history and ambience of a grand family home. It offers a visit to the house, parks, adventure playground, maze magnificent gardens, a farm shop and a really unusual water feature which cascades down the hill behind the house - there is much more to see if you have the time. This is certainly a case where first impressions count. It has the wow factor from the road and once you park up and walk anywhere on the estate you are ...

Review of Chatsworth House

A city in the sunshine, remote and empty, Perth, W.A.

Advantages: Wonderful climate, no crowds, clean, very pretty
Disadvantages: Not very historically interesting

seemed to be very few people around either. It was a bit like a town at 7am on a sleepy Sunday but it was always like that on the few days we were there. It must be very strange and unnerving for a person from Perth coming to somewhere like London or Hong Kong and experiencing the crowds and noise in a big city. =Trip to Freemantle = We got up in time to get the ""Captain Cook Swan River Cruise"" to ""Freemantle"". The boat left at 9.45 from Barrack Street Jetty and proceeded at a sedate pace along the river towards Freemantle. There was complimentary tea and coffee and other snacks and drinks for sale. The commentary was quite interesting but there was nothing particularly remarkable along the journey. It was very pleasant seeing all the yacht clubs, scenery and wealthy people?s house but there was no one thing that stood out. We arrived ...
