we went to yllas for christmas 07 and we decided to that for value for money it was far better to go on a week holiday there with inghams rather than the shorter santa breaks
our flight was very early and from bristol, flying into kittila - we went with inghams and booked to stay in a log cabin self catering
the transfer from the airport was about an hour and the roads are very straight - we arrived at our little cabin which was like a little row of terraced cabins, 4 canins in total in a row and about 5 sets of rows, the cabin was called lumpunko and is classified as the yllas log cabins with inghams
yllas is a traditional lappish village, it is very spread out and you do have to walk a lot to get anywhere - this is something that we loved, it was just the most magical experience walking through the woods in the snow, the children running about and rolling in the snow, it was just the most magical holiday I thought I would ever have
Yllas is sort of split into two sides, with the ski resort in the middle of it, the side we stayed at is called the akas side, this is where the supermarket and the few shops are, the other side is called the saaga side, it is about 4 to 5 miles away and is is based around the piste, this is not much around there other than the sporting side of things, so bear this in mind if you are planning to go to yllas
There is not much to go in yllas, no nightlife other than what goes on in the hotels, there are a handful of restuarants which all sort of close at about 10pm so if you want night life don't come here, if you want magical walks through the woods, playing in the snow and wilderness then yllas is for you - the skiing is great too
since going to yllas in dec 07 we have returned to yllas twice, the next time we went was in april 08, we went with crystalski (who no longer do lapland), we went on a last min cheapy and again stayed in a log cabin, this time it was not so magical as it was coming to the end of the season and the sunlight days were long, the snow was melting but it was still lovely to go back, the skiiing again was excellent
then the last time we went was for new year 08 into 09 - this time we went with crystal, we had booked a log cabin but they changed our booking and we were put in more modern cabins, they were called the villa armas - they were great inside but didn't have the magic of the log cabins or the views - this time out visit was not so great, mainly due to the extreems in temps - it was -27 on most days and despite being kitted out well the cold just bit through it all, especially our faces - we still had a magical time but found a lot of changes in yllas, the supermarkedtwas now massive and there were burger bars etc, it was still magical especially on new year but it was very busy and I suppose it will never live up to the memories it gave us of our first visit
I do highly recommend yllas if you want a magical time in lapland with some bars and resturants but now having being to saariselka I recommend that over anywhere else but the transfer may not suit everyone so if you can't go there then yllas is a close second

Advantages: Lots of fun things to do (santa park, reindeer ride, husky ride, snow mobile) Disadvantages: Inghams could have organised better for snowsuit + boot pick-up & return
