It's 'Pigging' Good Fun!

Advantages: Lots to entertain the whole family
Disadvantages: It's very dependent on the weather

...fail to have fun at York Maze - there really is something for everyone, its fantastic value for money and there is a lot of fun to be had. The only thing left for me to tell you is the small print: Location - Its ten minutes out of the city centre by car, on Elvington Lane. There's plenty of on-site parking. Price - £7.95 for adults, £6.95 for children and £7.45 for OAPs. You can get a family ticket for £28 and a family season ticket (valid for unlimited ...
...groups of ten or more get a 50p per person discount. They accepted cash and cards. Facilities - There's plenty of shops and eateries including an outdoor BBQ, ice cream shops and cafes as well as a gift shop, toilets and plenty of areas for picnics. Opening times - Its open seven days a week from 10am until 6.30pm (last entry in 4.30pm) and it's open from 18th July until 6th September. Events - They have a vast array of events throughout the season ...

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall, York

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

...had never been to The Merchant Adventurers Hall. I had seen the signs for it but I was never too sure what it was and since its tucked away out of sight from the main thoroughfares it's a place I always forget to check out. A friend recently told me that this is a 14th century timber framed building that is the largest building of its type and age in Britain so I figured that this time around I ought to check it out. Built as a medieval guildhall ...
...be confused with the nearby Merchant Taylor's Hall, which was a mistake that I initially made. The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is tucked away down a short alley but the size of the building and the plot that it occupies came as quite a shock. Located right in the heart of the city centre, where land prices are at a premium it has a surprisingly large garden and there are plenty of grounds that surround it. The building itself looks lovely from the ...

One of York's little gems!

Advantages: Lots of history, free to visit
Disadvantages: Not easy to find

...little hidden gems and the Holy Trinity Church is one of them. It is located off Goodramgate, one of the busiest streets in York and is accessed via a small narrow lane that leads through an arched iron gate into a small church yard. If you walk down Goodramgate there is a tiny sign on the wall that leads to this church but to say that this is not prominent is an understatement. I actually did spot this sign quite by chance during a recent visit ...
...in it. The Holy Trinity Church was for many years dedicated to St Helen and for this reason and the fact that it faces St Helen's Square it is sometimes referred to by locals as St Helen's Church, but this reference is both incorrect and misleading. With over 45 different parish churches within the centre of York the nomenclature of these churches will never be straightforward, but the truth is there is another, correctly named St Helens Church nearby, ...

The secret shrine of The Saint Margaret Clitherow

Advantages: An interesting story, free to visit
Disadvantages: Not easy to find, a bit eerie

...the Shrine of The Saint Margaret Clitherow is an example of one such place that I recently discovered. It is located within a small medieval house in The Shambles area of York, which is the oldest part of the town where many of the buildings are black and white timber framed. Unless you knew of its existence you would almost certainly pass it by. The exterior of this house is nothing out of the ordinary and its very existence is not widely publicised. ...
...with an altar. Margaret Clitherow was a remarkable woman in many ways but her early life was nothing out of the ordinary. She was born Margaret Middleton, the daughter of a candle maker in 1556 at the end of the reign of the Tudor Queen Mary and lived her early life as a Protestant. In her late teens she married a local butcher called John Clitherow who was also a Protestant but sometime shortly after this marriage she converted to Catholicism. This ...

Mixed feelings about St Nicholas's Fayre

Advantages: Lovely medieval setting
Disadvantages: It could have been a whole lot better

...markets that takes place in York during the festive period. Established back in 1992 it is the largest of them all and attracts the greatest number of visitors. It takes place over a four day period during either the last weekend of November or the first weekend of December. The 2008 event took place between Thursday 27th November and December 1st. Having just been to this market I thought that I would share my experience with you. I arrived about ...
...The crowds at York were also too much for me, I expected it to be busy but it was absolutely impossible to get near to a lot of the stalls and it certainly wasn't possible to just stroll around and browse with people pushing and shoving from every direction. There are stalls in almost all of the squares that you pass. The goods they were selling ranged from arts and crafts and clothes to locally grown food and of course there were hot dogs and mulled ...
