I actually live in York, but thought I would write a review for those planning on visiting, because to be honest, there are a lot of places guide books say to go which are a total waste of time. I wouldn.t plan on going to York for any longer than a week because there isn't a great deal to do. There are some really nice guest houses and hotels. The marriott and The Royal York are very nice - not too cheap though. There are also some really nice guest houses near the football ground. Places to eat- 'Ask' Pizza near Macdonalds in the city centre is a fantastic Italian, the meals are really reasonably priced considering the place is so posh looking! I have been hear about 3 times and have never had or known anyone else to have a bad meal. The only downfall is that the drinks are expensive. The Exhibition on the corner of gillygate serves nice food as does Off The Wall down gillygate. Oscars and The Slug and Lettuce are also good places for lunch. There is also the usual Pizza Hut, Macdonalds, Burger King and KFC. Good pubs to go in are the Cross Keys, O'Neills Irish bar, Old Orleans, Varsity and The exhibition has a beer garden which is always good. There are also plenty more. The nightlife is not too bad, Micklegate is worth doing once. Activities to do in York - The Minster is worth a look and Cliffords Tower. The DUngeons are good. A ghost walk is also on in the town most nights. Taking a walk around the city walls is quite nice too. There is The McArthur GLen Designer outlet which most guidebooks advise going to, but unless you've got a lot of money to spend on designer clothes I wouild say it's too far out of the way to bother going. The maiun city centre shopping is not bad, but nothing special. There is a little christmas fair on nearer Christmas which little kids up to about 6 years old love. There is usually a christmas market too which is good. There are two shopping parks called Clifton Moor and MOnks Cross, Monks Cross is more for clothes shopping, whereas Clifton Moor is more household. There is a swimming pool with a few slides near Monks cross called Waterworld, good place to take the children and go shopping. There is apparently now a small go-karting ring there too but I haven't seen it yet so cannot comment. There is also Megabowl at Clifton Moor which is another good place to take the children, with bowling, arcade games, pool and a nice bar area-which serves good food! Families with children under 10 would have a good time in york, and couples or groups visiting to shop and go to pubs would have a great time. But I wouldn't think teenagers would love York as much because they wopuld probably get bored.
