4*-shame I can't give it an extra half
Review of Novotel York, York by
DC-DanielColeflax
Advantages: practically perfect in almost every way
Disadvantages: room not quite as depicted on the website
...a couple of nights in Novotel York Centre. I was very very impressed and want to share my experiences with you.
FINDING IT
The hotel is quite difficult to find and not very well sign posted, however is just off of Fewster way in the centre of York. It is just on the edge of the canal and also very close to the river. As said, it was not easy to find however was in a good central location, I'd just recommend getting a map before going to help you ... ...warning, if you visit the Novotel website you will see two different room pictures, one with blue cushions, one with orange cushions. The ones with the blue cushions are the standard rooms and the ones with orange are presumably premier rooms. Do not expect the standards of the orange rooms in your room if you have booked standard-that is the mistake we made. Still, the room was comfortable and reasonable and did what it had to do. We also had a ...

Very disappointing
Review of Hilton Hotel, York by
Citybreak
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Expensive mistake
We have never been so disappointed with a supposedly 'luxury' hotel. Despite booking a 'deluxe' room, the room was tiny, the bath was stained and suitable only for the short of limb, the 'castle' view was of the castle car park and the deluxe package of fruit, wine, dressing gowns was no where to be found. It was all hard work, phoning reception to point out everything missing, being woken by the cleaners at 8.50 on a Sunday morning, and being given ...

Short Break - Holiday Inn York
Review of Holiday Inn, York by
Mainy
Advantages: Location, accessability, breakfasts
Disadvantages: Hidden hair dryer!
...spent 3 nights in this Holiday Inn in January 2008. It is on the outskirtds of York and easy to find/get to.
The room was good and despite facing the main road there was no problem with noise, etc.. It was a good size, clean and tidy with a nice ensuite, tea/coffee facilities. The hair dryer for some reason hides in a drawer but once found was better than the astmatic ones you sometimes get!
The breakfasts were good, (buffet style). Good choice ... ...to ample quantities! We did not eat any other meals there though they are avaliable.
Parking is good with lots of spaces to the front, side and round the back. The staff were friendly and helpful.
In the foyer there are lots of leaflets avaliable of local places of interest.
The hotel is handy for the racecourse and the there are several regular buses into town on the main road. There is a Co-op at a nearby garage for stocking up on sweets, etc..

Hen night at Marriott York
Review of Marriott Hotel, York by
dance7
Advantages: Location, facilities
Disadvantages: maintenance/cleanliness
I spent an overnight weekend stay at this hotel earlier this year for my hen night. There was a group of 9 of us and we managed to get triple rooms (2 double beds) and the reception staff were helpful as I changed my booking twice due to numbers in my party. The hotel is greatly located a short taxi ride from city centre, costing about 7 pounds. The facilities were excellent and spending most of the afternoon in the spa it was a fairly cost effective ...

Modern styling if a little Spartan
Review of Ramada Encore, York by
dobieg
Advantages: Inexpensive and handy for night clubs
Disadvantages: perhaps a little TOO handy for some tastes
...occasion to use the York Ramada Encore for a weekend break, with my better half, and a couple of very good friends.
If your idea if chain hotels is excessively over decorated chintz palaces, then you may be in for a pleasant surprise.
The Ramada Encore is a modern building on the western bank of the Ouze - or putting it slightly differently, at the 'station' end of the city centre, and is on the lower section of Micklegate.
Décor style is 'informal ... ...laminate flooring in the bedrooms. Furniture is kept to a minimum, we had one of the larger rooms, so we had a swivel chair on castors and a two-seater settee.
Thankfully, there is a complete absence of second rate 'architectural studies' screwed to the walls!
Furniture in the bedrooms is kept to an absolute minimum; writing desk with kettle and TV, double bed, and instead of the built in wardrobe, hangers on the wall. Ensuite bathrooms have a ...
