Very disappointing
Review of Hilton Hotel, York by
Citybreak
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Expensive mistake
We have never been so disappointed with a supposedly 'luxury' hotel. Despite booking a 'deluxe' room, the room was tiny, the bath was stained and suitable only for the short of limb, the 'castle' view was of the castle car park and the deluxe package of fruit, wine, dressing gowns was no where to be found. It was all hard work, phoning reception to point out everything missing, being woken by the cleaners at 8.50 on a Sunday morning, and being given ...

Royal York Hotel, York
Review of The Royal York, York by
sharkel
Advantages: Beautiful surroundings, leisure faclities
Disadvantages: slightly expensive
...We had originally booked into the York Ibis but I decided to book this hotel as a surprise for him and cancel the Ibis - and I'm glad I did. I researched quite a few hotels in York but this one seemed to have the grandeur, facilities and central location I was looking for - and it had a spa!
Originally named the Royal Station Hotel, the hotel was opened in the 1878 and was owned by the Northeastern Railway Company, the purpose of the hotel being ... ...Although named the Royal Hotel, no member of royalty has actually stayed here. The hotel is built on an old Roman cemetery and there have been excavations, uncovering roman remains.
~~~First Impressions~~~
Upon driving into the car park of this beautiful Victorian building you are immediately struck by the size and splendour of the hotel. We arrived when it was dark and the hotel was all lit up and looked really striking. We were able to find a ...
The best hotel in York
Review of Best Western Dean Court Hotel, York by
littledoves
Advantages: Close to historic centre of York with great views of the Minster
Disadvantages: Limited car parking space
We had a very enjoyable stay here last April whislt I was expecting my baby daughter. The hotel was extremely friendly and the rooms were spacious and overlooking the Minster. Wednesday evening was a real treat - the bellringing practise night - wow, the sound of the bells was wonderful.
Foodwise, the breakfasts were large and really set us up for the day. But the evening meal was in a class of its own - well planned and extremely tasty. I felt ... ...brought it all upstairs for us and we tucked into roast duck sat on the large kingsize bed!!!
The situation is just right - close to the centre of the city but surprisingly quiet at night. (apart from bell practise night!!) If you are looking for a few days away from it all then I receommend this hotel and York. I certainly felt relaxed and recharged after my visit. ...
Briarly Comfortable
Review of Briar Lea Guest House, York by
hiker
Advantages: Location, friendly welcome, price,....and breakfast!
Disadvantages: Smaller rooms are not for cat swingers
...by the good folks at Briar Lea.
I'll admit to throwing that figure in early because I want to put the place in context before telling how I found it & what I thought. The context is: most excellent value. What it isn't, is a hotel with dining facilities, spa, bar and lots of other fripperies that we didn't want anyway.
What it is, is a very friendly couple-run guest house offering B'n'B accommodation right in the heart of York. It is within an ... ...context of my stay in Briar Lea was a girly weekend in the City for no particular reason with three friends. For reasons domestic and railways-related our "weekend" was to be mid-week - travelling up to York on a Monday, returning Thursday - giving us three nights in the city.
Between the four of us we cover most bases in terms of relationship status, and all the guys were being left behind.
Income and expenditure-commitments also vary greatly ...
4*-shame I can't give it an extra half
Review of Novotel York, York by
DC-DanielColeflax
Advantages: practically perfect in almost every way
Disadvantages: room not quite as depicted on the website
...a couple of nights in Novotel York Centre. I was very very impressed and want to share my experiences with you.
FINDING IT
The hotel is quite difficult to find and not very well sign posted, however is just off of Fewster way in the centre of York. It is just on the edge of the canal and also very close to the river. As said, it was not easy to find however was in a good central location, I'd just recommend getting a map before going to help you ... ...warning, if you visit the Novotel website you will see two different room pictures, one with blue cushions, one with orange cushions. The ones with the blue cushions are the standard rooms and the ones with orange are presumably premier rooms. Do not expect the standards of the orange rooms in your room if you have booked standard-that is the mistake we made. Still, the room was comfortable and reasonable and did what it had to do. We also had a ...
