Holmlea Guesthouse- an acceptable B&B in York

Advantages: reasonable price and free internet entrance.
Disadvantages: no lock in bathroom and no shower in peak time.

...stay was a B&B named Holmlea Guesthouse. Why we chose it? Before we started our trip we searched on the internet trying to find reasonably priced accommodation that ideally was close to the tourist areas of York. Most B&Bs and hotels we found charged at least £60 for a double room per night. However Holmlea was an exception. On their own website they advertised £45 for a double room with private bathroom, but not en-suite. Personally I’m not used ...
...The breakfast On Holmlea website they said they serve continental breakfast. Each morning at 8.30am a tray was left outside our door. On it were 2 small croissants, yoghurts and juices plus three jam portions (all bought from Tesco). After the experience of our first breakfast my husband would leave a little earlier to visit a local shop and buy extra food. Checking out When we checked out we were told they don’t accept any plastic card. So my ...

We've fallen in love with the George

Advantages: Family-run, hotel offering a very warm welcome
Disadvantages: 11 miles from York city centre

The experience of staying at this hotel is one you want to repeat again and again. We have just visited for the third time. Kay and Michael, the hotel owners, are lovely people, and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. They took a great deal of interest in our holiday - the places we were intending to visit, how we were getting there, and the attractions we might see. They provided details of York's park and ride, bus routes and timetables, ...
...the George are friendly; the lady who served breakfast even took the trouble to remember our usual order. We have stayed in the main hotel on two occasions and once in the annex to the hotel. On all three visits, the rooms have been of a high standard, well kept, clean, warm and surprisingly spacious. The beds always offer a very good night's sleep. I would recommend you book via the George's website, which has very good "internet deals", right ...

Awful

Advantages: Close to city centre
Disadvantages: lack of cleanliness

Take my advice and don't book this hotel. It is absolutely terrible. We found it filthy, damp ridden, old-fashioned in decor, noisy and a complete waste of money. Our room had wallpaper peeling of. The safety of the electricity wiring was questionable. Used towels by the previous guests were still there when we got to our room. The ensuite sink was cracked and flooding the floor. The shower/bath area had mould growing all over it. The double glazing ...
...from the road was loud and disturbed our sleep. The mugs for tea/coffee making were filthy inside as well as the tray that they were placed on was dusty and had hairs on it. The bed hadn't been made properly and we mysteriously itched during the night. At breakfast, the food was ok but the sausages were mostly cereal based rather than meaty. Coffee was instant rather than percolated. Watch out for the milk jugs. Ours had sour milk around the rim. ...

Excellent in every way

Advantages: Small, personal and friendly.
Disadvantages: None we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at Carlton House following family reccomendation. When we arrived we were met by Mark the owner who was very welcoming and reccomended good resaurants for evening meals. All rooms are decorated to an excellent standard, with clenliness to match, beds were extremly comfortable, The staff are freindly and bubbly and will do their best to accomodate your needs. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice and was served between 7:45 and 9:15 ...
...for 9 cars which we found really useful and is very well managed by the owners. The Carlton House is a ten minute walk into York at a steady pace and York being quite small all attractions are close to hand. We will definatley be returning and reccomending to friends. ...

St Deny's, the clean hotel for my dirty weekend!

Advantages: Polite and helpful staff, clean hotel.
Disadvantages: Bed a bot on the small side for my husband.

...the perfect hotel. St Denys hotel, a small but very quaint hotel, housing 13 rooms only, but with it’s own parking facilities, the only pre-requisite my husband demanded, was the perfect choice so I picked it, booked it and f***ked off….. So, I went a bit Peter Kay then! After initially contacting the hotel directly, I was advised by the receptionist that if I booked it through the York tourist board site, via the St Deny’s link, I would be able ...
...it’s heyday was once the St Deny’s church rectory, the church still being there and providing a truly glorious view from your window in the morning, I have to say though, as the church is slapbang in the middle of a residential area, there were no peals of bells to be heard, though the bell tolls from The York Minster itself were much more regular! The hotel, from the outside, was bright and cheery with there being an abundance of flowers and hanging ...
