Yorkshire lass' Guide to York

Advantages: Beautiful architecture, lots of culture, good pubs, loads to do, nice bars
Disadvantages: Very crowded in summer, can be v.rough at night, not great for clubbing

The beautiful medieval city of York lies right in the heart of the UK - smack bang in the middle between London and Edinburgh on the east-coast rail-line, making it an easy daytrip: so you've no excuse not to visit!
I am lucky enough to live in this beautiful city and know the place well. I have tried to make this review as broad as possible, so people get an idea of what it's like no matter what they come for. I have done my best to write ...
...a very cosmopolitan, modern city, York retains it's links with it's past: the various people who have inhabited (and invaded!) York over the years have all left their mark on the City: from the Vikings and Romans to the Georgians, Victorians and Edwardians; examples of their culture and grand architecture can be found all over the city.
The City itself is large enough to hold all the attractions of a big City, but small enough to remain charming ... more

York is a city that is impossible to hate

Advantages: Friendly, quirky, excellent bars and restaurants and attractions that will suit everyone.
Disadvantages: Other people know this too and come in their hundreds

I was born near to York in a place called Harrogate and went to York for University, I now return as regularly as I can. York is one of the few large cities in England that has retained it's prettiness whilst still being extremely friendly towards visitors. It does not sprawl far outside the city walls and provides something new on every visit. Architecture ------------------------ - Naturally the oldest thing in York are the Roman and Medival ...
...best way to sightsee around York as it takes you past all the views. On a clear day, it is said you can see Leeds through binoculars. - In amongst other things, York has it's spectacular Minster wich is almost tucked away behind the main shopping areas and provide a pleasant respite to the shopping rush. The services are also regular at the Minster and it's adjoining churches - Scattered across the city too are various styles of architecture from ...

York- Short Break Musings

Advantages: Lots to do, good range of shops/eateries
Disadvantages: Flat

...wife and I went to York for a 3 night break in January of 2008. We drove down from sunny jockoland and despite my efforts found the hotel eventually. (Being on a road to Leeds against our will happened a few times!). We stayed at the Holiday Inn near the Race course, (reviewed separately). First Impressions It seemed to be a nice place. However it was wet, really wet. We're Scottish and we thought it was wet! That is unlikely to always be the case. ...
...top. The view of York is okay, you can see the Minster between buildings and erm, that's about it really, a few churches and you can look down on the river and expensive car park. There is a small room that remains but it is mainly thick walls and a space age shop building that alters the ambience somewhat. You could choose to climb up the steps to the entrance and see some of the view before climbing back down, keeping your cash for the next car ...

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME .......

Advantages: lots to do and see, very attractive
Disadvantages: none at all

The city of York is the most wonderful place to visit, and indeed I spent a day there only yesterday. It is one of the few Cities that hasn’t been tainted by the modern feel, and is in fact steeped in history, so much so that you only need look round to see it. York was once known as Yorvik which stems back to Viking times, medieval artefacts are dotted all around and preserved impeccably. The Castle Keep, Clifford’s Tower and the ...
...points in and even outside York on the skyline. Highly decorative with stone and woodcarvings, beautiful stained glass windows, ornate hand painted gold ceilings and paintings, it is almost breathtaking, you feel a strange sense of deep peace whilst perusing the building, its awesome. This is remarkable as in July 1984 lightening struck the south transept and caused a huge fire. The restoration was a daunting task as the roofing materials needed ...

How to relax on holiday

Advantages: Compact, lovely atmosphere, relaxing, so much to see and do
Disadvantages: None whatsoever

...a two night break in York – our first holiday without children for twenty years, and a fantastic break it was too. I love York, it’s a wonderful place for a short holiday, its such a compact and beautiful city oozing history with its three miles of walls encircling a maze of medieval streets and hidden alleyways – all with really fascinating stories. The four main entrances to the city centre are still dominated by the imposing ...
...while the incredible York Minster a magnificent gothic cathedral which towers over the city as it has done for over 800 years contains England's greatest concentration of medieval stained glass. Its grandeur and surpassing beauty attracts visitors from all over the world. There’s so much to see and do in York. For a start there’s four world class museums. York's Castle Museum is famous for some of the finest collections in the country: ...

A residents view

Advantages: Beautiful, loads of pubs, lots of shops
Disadvantages: Too many tourists, can be pricey

...about the enchanted place. York - The City of Eternal Tourism: With a countless number of "ye olde worlde" attractions and a reputation that supercedes Mike Tyson, York pulls the crowds better than a Spielberg blockbuster. York obvioucly has a great deal of history to it, with it being Eboracum to the Romans, then Jorvik to the Vikings and now the modern day. Those with any grasp of history will know that that was a very brief look at 2000 years ...
...attractions detailing the history of York and tour buses travel the city regularly to show eager tourists the ancient town. There is also the magnificent Minster in the centre of York, York dungeons, the Railway Museum and regular ghost walks (one of which claims to include "Mad Alice" - sounds interesting). Of course, tourism does have its setbacks, as it isn't nice for "the locals" to have to wade through all hundred billion (rough estimate) tourists ...

I want to be apart of it...

Advantages: Beautiful buildings, lots to do, cheap
Disadvantages: Lots of walking to be done, very busy, tipping

restaurant in particular, Roxies, situated in Times Square, we were recommended to share our sandwhich between each other as the sandwich was so large! New York restaurants don't slack when it comes to portions.. and the quality of food can i add is also superb! **** BARS **** We found it strange that we didn't come across many bars. We never got round to finding the heart of the pubs & clubs on the nightlife front. On general walking around New York and doing tourist things, we only found a selection of pubs. Some of which were traditional and filled with locals. On purchasing your first drink, you are then given table service which they seem to be quite big on. Make sure you carry some I.D with you, we were told by a bar tender that is usual for them to ask anyone who looks under the age of 30 for I.D - my partner who is in his 30's was ...

I'll be back someday....

Advantages: it lived up to all my expectations
Disadvantages: so much to do but so little time

There are some places that just have to be visited at least once in your life. New York is the kind of city that needs to be visited at least twice! If anyone asked me prior to my visit to New York in May if you could visit one place in the world where would it be? Without hesitation I'd answer New York. If you asked me that question now the answer would still be New York When most people think of New York they think of one of the five boroughs - Manhattan. New York City is actually made of Manhattan,Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Apart from Brooklyn which I would have visited if I'd have completed the entire length of the Brooklyn bridge I managed to to visit abet briefly all of the other four boroughs on my 3 night stop in New York. ~Getting there~ New York is served by 3 airports. JFK in Queens, Newark ...

So Good They Named It Twice

Advantages: Lots to do
Disadvantages: Not enough time!

-only! ;) EATING AND DRINKING You'll have absolutely no trouble finding a place to eat or drink in New York - there's a bar, pub or restaurant just about everywhere you look! A good idea is to buy a guidebook and choose one of the places it recommends, depending on what you're looking for. No matter what your taste, there should be somewhere that caters for you! One thing to pay attention to is whether a restaurant takes credit cards (many don't) - the highly recommended John's Pizzeria in Greenwich Village for instance, is cash only, so go prepared! Tips are expected and a rough guide in restaurants is to double the 8.25% sales tax that will appear on your bill. We generally found bars to be pretty expensive; two beers setting us back $12 in one pub, plus a tip on top of that. Obviously prices will vary from venue to venue, but don't expect it to ...
