Possibly the best

Advantages: Only direct public transport to York from Whitby, Fairly comfortable
Disadvantages: First Bus from my Town to York / Leeds doesn't leave 'til 10:51am, little pricey

Yorkshire Coastliner has been running services in my area (Whitby, North Yorkshire) for quite a few years now (not sure exactly when they first started coming here)....... running services directly to York (via Malton), then on to Leeds.

Their Buses are considerable more comfortable than them Arriva things I ranted about elsewhere on this site, and the drivers actually bother to get off their Backsides before starting a journey from ...
...- Sleights Road (along the Yorkshire River Esk), and joins the A169 road to Pickering......... along the way taking de-tours through Goathland (you've probably seen it in that "HEARTBEAT" series on ITV + also the first "HARRY POTTER" movie).... where you go over a bridge with a perfect view of the Railway station of the NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY, with at least 1 Steam loco waiting at the station.
After Goathland, it ... more

Speed

Reliability

Could show some other operators a thing or 2

Advantages: Reasonable fares, Good quality vehicles, reliable
Disadvantages: Journeys to the coast start in Leeds

I use Yorkshire coastliner services about 4 times a year mainly travelling west from York to Leeds. The company This company is run by one of those chain companies (Blazefield holdings), which also run companies such as Harrogate/ Keighly and district, Coastliner has a policy of using a new fleet of vehicles, for passenger comfort and reliability. The routes are: 840 Leeds York Whitby every 2hours 842 Leeds York Thornton Dale every 2 hours ...
...the same route from Leeds to Malton Bus depot (where the company is based) before branching out in their respective directions. THere is also another route that they run which is less frequent the 845 from leeds to Bridlington. My oppinion The times i have used them i have always found the bus has been reasonably on time, Bearing in mind that the core part of the routes are along the A64 which as anyone who uses this road will know that it can ...

Happy With The Piggs

Advantages: Excellent food, nice bar ambience, friendly
Disadvantages: Wines expensive

features in TV programmes like Heartbeat, and the Herriot vet programmes and the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline. A little further afield is York but realistically a visit to York would be easier in a York hotel. The hotel is a converted 17th century farmhouse and has a lovely warm atmosphere. The bar area has the ambience of a traditional English pub but also serves a good range of bar meals. The menu changes regularly and appears on the obligatory chalkboards. Better come hungry as portions are on the large side. How pub food has moved on since the chicken-in-a-basket days. Local ales are hand pumped as well as London Pride. We dined in the restaurant which offered an excellent menu including locally caught fish and well prepared meat dishes. The standard of food and service are very high. At about £20 for three courses excluding ...

Historic Charm

Advantages: Historical, Quaint, Friendly
Disadvantages: Hilly for the disabled and older people

Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coastline has a lot of historical charm about it. It has quaint old cobbled streets and many colourful houses and shops to visit. A trip to this town at any time of year is a must for would-be visitors to this part of the country. Whitby is dominated by the Abbey which is located on the cliff top, above the River Esk. To reach this picturesque part of town you must climb 199 steps. The Abbey is known as the parish Church of St. Mary. The author, Bram Stoker wrote the world renowned novel "Dracula", based on the churchyard. Another well-known person who originated from Whitby was Captain James Cook. His memorial statue can be seen on Whitby's West Cliff. Smuggling was one of Whitby's famous pastimes in years gone-by. Nearby Robin Hood's Bay is steeped in smuggling history, and I can say ...

Review of Whitby (England)

getting around leeds

Advantages: transport , shops, resturants , cinema, train station , coach station
Disadvantages: none

cannot say that generally I am a fan of buses for reasons too many to mention. There are an excellent range of fares available on First Leeds transport, day tickets cost less than £2 and you can have unlimited travel on First bus throughout the Leeds and other areas. just ten minutes away is the train station were you can travel anywere. the yorkshire coastliner is very good in good weather as it goes from leeds to ripon, pickering, malton, york, scarbrough, bridlington. whitby, flamingo land, this costs 3.00 to £4.00 pound depending how many off you are traveling the leeds bus station as its own coach station for the national express were you can pick up tickets and even go for something to eat. just out side the bus station there is a taxi rank but be carefull you may get ripped off ...
